What do people do to "fill" the holes for utilities?

Yahoo Message Number: 386
When you are camped and have your utilities going out the compartment through the "hole", what are folks doing to keep critters from entering? We haven't seen a substitute cover that has smaller holes to use with your cords/hoses going through it. Also, we have the electric cord on the reel, so there's a hole there that would allow critters entry into the entire bay. I'd like to hear of solutions folks have used. We bought some foam and thought we'd cut it to fit, but there may be other better solutions. Thanks...Jan

Jan - We have not been really concerned about critters getting where they should be. Down in the South I am most worried about things like ants. I hear they can be terrible to get rid of.
One suggestion that we used in a relative's mobile vactaion home where there were lines coming in was steel wool. Creepy crawlers might still work their way through but at least it would be more pliable than a piece of foam. Just stuff it in really thick and see what happens.

I have a cousin with a welding shop. He cut a metal plate with a slot just large enough for the 50 amp cord and welded a handle on it. Now when I reel out the cord this plate seals the utility hole arround the cord where it comes out of my 3rd bay. The 4th bay, the water compartment is well sealed and does not need mouse proofing.

Jan,

put a few mothballs into an OPEN jar and put that into the compartment. I have not had the need to try this myself but several people who did told me they got rid of mice and ants that way. If you camp for long periods of time, replace the mothballs with fresh ones once a month or so.
Good luck !
