So we took it to our paint and body guy to check out. He stripped the clear off the white areas with a razor blade and is going to reshoot the whole thing in clear. He said the clear was still adhering to the color. His theory is the white was not sealed well before the clear was put on and that the sun is reflecting off the white and cooking the clear. Anyway he is doing the clear and a couple booboos for $3800, taking off the bra too.Tammy96 Intrigue 10250 Up for sale & 99 Magna 5605Quote from: stephen burdick \[br\]stephen burdick wrote:Date: Tue, 31 Aug 2004 13:27:25 -0700 (PDT) > From: stephen burdickSubject: Re: Resealing of Fiberglass Roof > To: Joey CampbellJoey; > Well, I finally got my act together. I've made the paint to match the cream color on the sides of my Magna. Been prepping the roof for the last week, off and on. QuoteStarted with a sharp putty knife and strapping tape. checked the edges all the way around the coach roof. Pulled off what loose clear coat this way. QuoteSecond. Used 3M wetNdry 240 grit sandpaper and a pad sander. Took about 8 sheets of this to clean the total roof. Feathered in the remaining tightly adhering clear coat on the upper edges of the sides. Also used a single edge razor blade on the front. Saw some staining under the clear coat. This took the clear coat completely off. Quick too. QuoteThird: Used 3M wetNdry 400 grit for the finish sanding. At least at the roof/side edges, want that nice clean look where the clear coat remains. QuoteNext step is the clean of the surface. I've got International paints surface cleaner, biodegradable. Any good surface prep that doesn't leave a residue will work.. Used a stiff Quotebristle brush on the roof walkway with the corrigation impression. CLEAN IS GOOD. That's where I'm at. If I can, this coming weekend is going to be taping off the coach and painting. Weather and time permitting. Quote Selected

I hope what ever he paints with have UV absorbers in it. The Uv radiation from the sun is breaking down the polyester gelcoat used to make the fiberglass. Uv passes thru the clear and slowly breaks the chemical bonds of the polyester. Over time this is just like house paint, a white chalky substance. I'm painting my Magna roof with a pigmented coating which matches the cream color of the sides. As for the sides, one of the big problems with clears over pigmented coatings is if the pigmented coating was overcured, (left for a long period of time prior to coating with the clear). The pigmented coating is very hard and the clear has problems adhering to this hard surface. Just food for thought. Good to hear he checked the adhesion. Got to keep these coaches looking like new.
