Fueling question

I'm out on my first big trip with our Magna 42', with Jeep toad (57' total). I have fueled about three times at Flying J's, but the problem is that they have signs directing RVs into the car fueling lanes. I have barely been able to get back out after fueling. Do any of you just go ahead and pull in where the trucks fuel? At 57' I don't think I qualify as an RV???

Like Dale, I always fuel up at the truck islands. The "RV" area is too congested, and if you end up behind someone that is dumping and getting propane, you may be there quite a while.
Just be prepared to get back into your new coach with dirty feet, as the truck areas tend to be dirty, what with spilled fuel around.

I always use the truck lanes. The RV section is to small, not enough room for the coach and tow car.

Glen,

Regardless of your length, you are still an RV. However, I always fuel at the truck pumps for ease of access, and noone at the stations have had a problem with that. Besides, the truck pumps fuel much faster than the regular pumps anyway. I carry along surgical gloves when I fuel. The pump handles tend to be oily at times.

Glen,

I think your money is the same color in either place. I use whichever is most convenient to get in/out of and no one has complained. Just follow the "pull forward to the line" after fueling rule for truckers when using the truck lanes to make room for the guy waiting behind you.
I prefer to use Pilot stations if possible, as they are a lot friendlier to RV's in general. Cleaner, fewer pot-holes in the truck lanes, etc.

Glen, I prefer the RV lanes at Flying J. They are much cleaner than the truck lanes. If the line is to long, than I'll use the truck lanes. The most important concern is how fresh is the fuel. The major issue is getting water in the diesel fuel. In my 3 years of diesel ownership I have never had a problem with water. I use Flying J 90% of the time and occasionally will use Pilot or TA when Flying J is not available.

One time I pulled in the truck lane at a small truck stop. There were 4 or 5 lanes, all empty. The person at the desk would not turn the pump on! Said that I might be blocking the lane for a truck. I tried to explain that there were open lanes and my $$$ were as good as theirs. I was told that I would have to go to the "other side". Of course, I went----to another station.

Hi Folks,

Isn't there a price difference when using a truck lane at Flying J? How do in get around it?

At the Flying J in Erenburg, they put a $300 temporary charge on my debit card when using a truck lane which dropped to the proper charge after 3-5 days. Don't know if they are still doing it.

Flying J is addressing the "tight" problem with all of their new stations getting larger area for the RV island and also putting dump station at both pump island with the the dump being placed at the same level as the drive. I have been in some very tight Flyning J's, one that comes to mind Amarillo, TX wow you need a 22ft. for that one.
Here at home we have one of the new ones with the large area for the RVs and large RV parking area. Just after it opened, I was there fueling my coach and a gentleman came over to talk to me. He was one of the big guys from the home office and asked how I liked the layout of the station. Gave him two thumps up and he told me that all of the new ones will have the larger access.
It now makes it so easy to come in after a run, fuel up and dump my tanks all at once with out having to cruise through the parking lot to get to the dump station.

Fred, The Flying J at Ehrenberg has been a regular stop for me for almost 20 years. I have never had a problem there, using debit card or paying cash. However, if you fuel on the truck side, you have to tell them you are an RV. There is a commercial fuel tax of about eight cents that you don't have to pay. That is the case at any truck stop in Arizona.
Another question for you. How is the reefer fan working out? I still haven't done that, but it is on my to do list. Have you experienced a vacuum and difficulty opening the door?? That is a thought that popped into my mind as I have been thinking this project out. Sure enjoyed our visit last year...I learned a lot!!!

I've not had that happen to me at ANY Flying J center. Use your "RV" discount card in the card reader on the truck island, you are asked (electronically) if it is a cash or charge purchase - and when you answer this question, press the # folowed by pressing the "enter" key, the pump is turned on. Then, after fueling, you pay inside - but make sure that you show the cashier your "RV" discount card and ASK if your discount has been included. 90% of the time is has NOT been included - and they will apply it then.
But the RV discount card starts the pumps and you should not have any charge applied to your card until you pay the actual amount.

Has anybody ever asked to have shoe storage bins added to the entry step risers on a CC? I have seen this feature on Newell's and it sure is a good place to put your soiled "slip on's".

I always go to the truck area. I usually do not have to wait, the turns are not as sharp and the fuel delivery is faster because the noozles are bigger.

I worry about the increase chances of damaging my coach by driving into an over crowed area and for that reason I am going to change the diesel tank inlet from a car nozzle to a truck type nozzle on my 1987 coach this next year. I am glade to see they have done that on the newer coaches.

Yes. It came up at one of the livability seminars two years ago shortly after step storage bins were introduced on some Monaco products.
The problem of introduction on CC products seems to be one of timing and resources rather then a desire.
CC is still a relatively small company and the number of engineers and other support staff that can work on new designs and changes is limited. Consequently they have to pick and choose where to direct their resources.
If you think about it, it is quite remarkable what has been achieved over the past two years, introduction of the Inspire, the Prevost conversion plant was relocated, new Affinity and Magna models, a completely new Allure and upgrades to the Intrigue line.
If memory serves me, CC is on track to produce a 1000 coaches this year, up from only four hundred during the bad times in 2001.
No doubt some of this rapid expansion has caused problems for many new owners when they try to get help from an over stretched service department.
Personally I am willing to be a little patient. At a time when the economy is still slow to rebound (especially true in Oregon) it is great to hear of a company that is creating jobs and helping improve the lives of local employees.
In the long run, a healthy productive CC is a benefit to all of us. Imagine what would have happened to us if the company had folded?

Use the truck area all the time. Faster filling, a hose to wash the windows and more space. We never use the RV area but in the truck area you need to watch your shoes, the area can be dirty.

Our preference has become Flying J and when asked about using their truck lanes, they've all said "no problem". We use a Costco Amex rebate card plus the RV discount card. Flying J has always given us a "cash price" with these credit cards. However, when using the Amex credit card at one Pilot, we were NOT given their ad price showing on the tall fuel price Banner. We were charged 3-4 cents ABOVE the ad price at the time of payment. I felt BAITED. In dealing with any franchised business there may be individual different business practices. Not a fan of Pilot.

We've also had friendly service at Loves.

The only time I use the RV lane is when I also need propane.
Otherwise, I use the truck lane. Just remember that the truckers are trying to earn a living at driving and time is money to them.
Be considerate and when finished pull ahead as soon as you get finished fueling. Then go in and pay. The truckers will appreciate it.
