Gasoline powered Moped or Vespa

Group,

We have decided to put off our trip to the Grand Canyon till late Oct, and go to Canada in August (looking for a little cooler weather). On this trip I don't think I want to take the Toad and i am thinking of buying a Vespa or ? does anyone have any experience with scooters and two people up. Way back when I was 14 living in Detroit area I had a Vespa (legal for 14 year olds if 5 hp back then). Can one of these things support two adults at a little over 400 lbs total plus? The wife won't drive one so two is not a option, any other similar devices i could consider? (skate boards and roller blades are out). Any help will be appreciated> Jphn D. 2001 Signature thinking about Canada and cool air

John,

I'm just curious, since you have a Signature why are you on a Country Coach list?

Your posts are always nice and helpful, so I'm not implying we don't want you, I just thought it was sort of odd.

Linda,

I am here because you are kind enough to let be here at least to now.
I really don't believe in all this my brand is better than your brand stuff. Some day I may want a CC and by reading and posting I find out a lot about your coaches and the company. I read your post for quite a while before I ever asked a question, and I have to say the CC people have given me a lot of good information. We all are traveling down the same roads and most of us have similar equiptment on our coaches and many problems, cures, etc are universal. I get more information from the Diesel group, CC, and Newmar then I get from the Monaco group. Right now I am trying to find out what people think of Mopeds and Scooters. The 50CC units seem too small for two people (420lbs total ouch) and the larger scooters require a motorcycle license(I think), if someone could tell me if the liscense thing is enforced when using the scooter in downtown areas of larger cities that would be a great help. I don't want to get a motorcycle license and my wife won't ride alone, so the only option seems to be drive the larger scooter and hope i don't get stopped. Thanks for listening.

Not sure on the license issue - however last I knew you could participate in a Motorcycle Safety Foundation riding workshop vice taking the exam down at the local dmv. Well worth while for new riders.

Hi John d.

We have a Honda Reflex Scooter which we carry on the back of our Intrigue. We have a rack from Camping World and it works out very well. Scooter weighs 350 pounds, is highway legal, and can easily carry two adults. It is the largest scooter that Honda makes, and is replacing the Helix. We love it. Fun and easy to drive. We also tow our CRV behind the rack (ball hitch is attached to rack) with no problem.

Thanks,

Not really a new rider have years of past bike experience both on and off road, just lazy and can't plan the time right now to get the test done prior to a Aug 4 th trip. Too much to do, too little time.

John,

I think the Vespa is really designed for one person although it seats two and two light-weight teenagers may find it comfortable to ride together. I remember them from the 60's as dependable transportation for many miles.

I would stay away from the small scooters offered at many RV dealers. These things are good enough for a drive from your rig to the campground store to pick up another bag of potato chips but they're just too small and lack power to go on longer excursions.

If range is not a consideration, have you considered bicycles ? Some come with auxiliary motors that let you enjoy the ride without using the pedals but on steep inclines you may want to apply some muscle to giddy up and go. ;-) If you already have bicycles, you can probably have some of those little motors fitted on.

There also are electric scooters which seem environmentally friendlier than the gasoline powered units. Of course, the battery adds to the weight of the scooter but they should be fine for short excursions.

As far as comfort is concerned, only you can judge what's good for you.

Regards,
Jeff
