04 Intrigue 42ft.

Talking with Bates RV in Fl. regarding a 42ft.04 Intrigue triple slide with a Cummins 400hp engine. Any comments regarding Bates RV? Does the 400hp have enough power and torgue to pull a 6000lbs toad? Anybody on this board have any information about this motorhome? Thanks,
Reese

I have a 2004 Intrigue Ovation, with an ISL, my toad weighs 4800 lbs, I run with full tanks, for a combined weight of about 41,500+ lbs. On 2 lane mountain roads the length slows me down more than lack of power. On long grades over 6% I do slow down, but I can keep up with the 45' Prevosts. I don't have the overheating problem some of Cat owners have with Intrigues.
You can't keep up with the 40' coaches with combo steel and aluminum chassis, with the same engine. I've got 15,000 miles on the coach and easily get 8mpg staying under 70 and 9 under 60. I have to plan passing more so than I did with my 330 ISC 36' Allure. But that's a function of combined length and comfort factor. Actually, on the same grades throughout the west and northwest the ISL Ovation out performs the Allure ISC, but more importantly the engine brake out performs the exhaust brake. The service brakes with the tag axle handle the increased weight and feel better than the Allure. The Ovation will also turn inside my 36'Allure. Good luck! TWI 11731 2004 Ovation. PS If you get a chance at a rally get Allison to reprogram the tranny to seek 3rd gear when using the engine brake rather than 4th. It really helps on the mountain 2 lane roads.- Original Message -----
