Engine Over Heating: CC Experiments

When taking my coach into Desert West Coach for maintenance I noticed a CC with some unusual changes. They have been running experiments with various changes on a 2005 new coach. They use HWY 17 up to Sunset Point, a good 6+% grade. One change that was copied from another manufacturer is a 6-inch long flap starting adjacent to the rear wheel flap and running the length of the radiator toward the rear. Another was 1-inch deep louvers at about 30 degrees to increase air entering the radiator. The final one noticed was a shorter rear flap. I think the experiments are being run to help the problem of over heating when the engines are brought up to EPA compliance. The diesel engine manufacturers have been paying heavy fines for past engines that do not meet the current standards. The new standards are much tougher and by 2007, nearly 0 on particle emissions. By 2007, all engines must have catalytic converters to comply. The end result is higher engine temperatures. The coach being tested had the air intake a couple of feet directly above the exhaust. Can't think of a much worse place to have the air intake when at idle. Heat rises and it appears exhaust gas is re circulated though the air intake. I don't know if this happens on other coaches, but seems to be a real problem. John 2002 Allure
