Brake Lights and engine brakes

"I only want our brake lights to come on when I hit the foot brake. If that doesn't happen, following traffic won't get that notification that we'll be slowing suddenly. If the brake lights are always on when the exhaust/engine brake is on, following traffic can't tell the difference" I agree with Dick, although they are commonly refered to as "Brakes" both the Pac-brake and the Jake are engine retarders. The Pac-brake restricts the flow of exhaust gas, while the Jake effectively changes the engine valve timing, both enhance the engine's natural compression retardation. As for what gear should be used to descend grades, a good rule of thumb is "use the same gear going down as you used going up"
