Computer Question

Yahoo Message Number: 13877
I know that many of you are experts on computers as well as Country Coach mh issues. I have something that has just recently gotten me stumped on my laptop, I am running WinXP and using the laptop with Verizon DSL. Each and every time I reboot the machine the HD continues to load something so I opened the Task Manager and found a program called SilentInstaller running, it runs for around an hour or so after I boot the machine. The files being loaded eventually fills my hard drive too within 2gb of capacity, I found the file that is being created and it is called GLC8.tmp, once this file gets large enough the installer stops and gives me an error message stating that it cannot install Wise01.dll due to not enough space on the hard drive. I have not been able to determine what secretinstaller is installing. I am running McAfee virus pro 9.0 which is supposed to protect agains worms as well as viruses. I think the problem started after installing XP SP2 but I am not sure.

Thanks for any help offered.

Travman,

Lets try a simple soultion and see if it corrects it.

Do you run AdAware from Lavasoft ??
If not go to http://www.lavasoft.com/ and download their free personal version.

The "GLC8.tmp" file is a "Data Miner". Adaware will pick up that and remove it for you. That may solve your problem.

The AV programs don't generally pick up spy/malware programs (data miners / cookies).

If that doesn't work let me know off forum and we'll go to the next step.

Another tip for staying away from pop-ups and other damaging bugs is to use a different browser other that Microsoft Explorer. I started using Mozilla as my internet browser and have not had a bit of trouble with pop-ups and infections like I did with Explorer.
Try it you'll like it: http://www.mozilla.org/

System Restore! If you haven't used it before, go to the help menu and it will be listed as an option. Just pick a date before you started having this problem and let the computer clean itself up.

Works for me nearly every time.

Merry Christmas!!

Thanks to everyone who responded with helpful suggestions. I had run AdAware but it did not find it, someone on the Verizon WINXP newsgroup suggested booting the machine in SAFE mode and then run AdAware again....that did the trick. It found a Data Miner in the register which obviously loads when Windows loads up everything when booted up normally. I guess in SAFE mode the Data Miner is not able to load up and AdAware found it. So, for now, my computer is back to it's old healthy self. And, I have have a Hard Drive which shows over 65 gb of free space instead of the 2 gb showing when the Data Miner filled it up.

Thanks again for the helful suggestions.

Travman, I too had a problem with my computer in that it has been running slowly and taking a long time to boot up. So I decided to start my computer in SAFE mode and run the ADWARE and SPYBOT and XOFTWARE. My, My, it was well worth it....ADWARE found 21 data miner that were not detected with a normal scan, spybot found 2 and XOFTWARE found 3. Now my computer is running much, much better. Thank you for the suggestion. Happy Holidays, Candace Hollick Affinity #6370
