stains in bedroom ceiling

OK gang, here's another one for you--- There are dark stains in a line across the ceiling in my bedroom. They appear to be following a rafter. What are they, what causes them, and what will remove them.
Have tried carpet cleaners such as Spot Shot with no results. Help! Paul Langton '97 Intrigue

Hi,

We had the same problem in our 96 Magna. They were caused by exhaust from the motor that was coming up through the seam located in the engine compartment. When you open the outside rear access door to engine compartment, the seam is located right above there. It goes completely across the body. We found the best way to seal it off was to completely coat it with rustproofing. (Our local Ziebart dealer did it for us) The stains are exhaust soot. Good luck on removal. The stain has started from the outside and has worked its way inside. We tried many different products to try to remove. We found a solvent based cleaner seemed to do the best. Test cleaners first in hidden spots. Again-good luck.

We have the same thing in several places (bathroom behind the fan, bedroom and so on) and last year Lazy Days (Daze?) cleaned the worst one but it reappeared in a few weeks. I suspect it is road dust being drafted around and that the carpet is filtering it out as the air comes into the coach.
Just another undocumented feature I suppose.

You may try a product call "Instagone", it was sold on the cable show "As Seen On TV", they have a web site or call 1-800-423-4248. We used it for a water stain in a Winnebago once and it worked great.

Hi all, I know this is late, but I just returned from the CC Snowbird rally at Tucson last week. was discussing the problem of the excessive blowby of oil from the block breather valve and a tech person stated that this causes the ceiling of the CC's to become stained black with the oil soot being sucked up through the opening in the side and end walls. This comment from the tech person was the first I had heard was the cause for the black ceilings stains. I guess it is as good an explaination as any. I do not have any stains on my ceiling, 2000 Allure 40 ft. Hope this helps some one in resolving this problem.

A mixture of oil, soot and road dirt seems to be the case. Apparently the side and end walls were not sealed adequately (or at all) allowing the contaminants to be drawn up and "filtered" by the ceiling carpet. We had this as far forward as the fan in the bathroom ceiling. It was finally sealed (at CC expense) during one of our many enforced camp-outs at various CC patch-up shops. Boy, a little quality control would go a long way!
