Battery charging & chrome fans.

Battery charging & chrome fans. Do all CCs have the battery tie relay, controlled by oil pressure switch & battery boost switch, like my 2005 has? If this relay was on when converter has AC power, the echo charger (with 15 amp limitation) would not be needed. Do you know why relay is not also on when converter has AC power input? Converter output charges both chassis & coach battery without or with loss via echo charger.
One argument against this possibility, the chassis battery would probably need water every month, as does coach battery.

Hi Eric,

Probably most all coaches have the configuration with the tie solenoid and echo charger in parallel and connected between the battery banks - ref S0699 large foldout. The Issue is if the engine is running and connected to shore power or generator operating, what is charging each bank? The alternator rules and the echo charger and converter(inverter/charger) look at the voltage and do no charging.
The practical aspect is that the alternator does a better job over the long run. My 2000 Allure has the same configuration as yours. I can't speak for more than 2 battery banks and more than one converter type configurations. Now if you load the system, where the alternator can't supply the load, then the converter may take up the slack while the engine is running, but this is not an ordinary situation. When the engine is running and the tie solenoid is energized, both batteries are exposed to the same voltage and the echo charger outputs are connected together so the echo charger can't operate.

No.

Thanks.

Question is why have an echo charger, when it seems relay could do better while AC is available to power converter-charger. When AC power is from genset relay is better as chassis battery will charge much faster.

Fred Sage,

Question was in charging house & chassis battery while on genset or shore power, not with main engine running. Why have echo charger, capable of 15 amp charge to chassis battery, when existing battery tie relay (battery boost/charge solenoid) could connect chassis battery to converter charger?? Chassis battery would then have much higher charge rate available. Chrome fan loads would not be significant.
This change could be done with addition of one small relay having 120 volt coil.

Why did CC use expensive echo charger instead?
