Electrical Systems

One of the few things the previous owner of our coach told us was never to cross the electical systems. Never plug in shore power when the generator or engine are running. He had replaced both inverters and the batteries. There may have been other problems as well. Has anyone had similar problems? From recent posts, it appears that connections are being made without disconnecting. John 2002 Allure

Here is my procedure for power transfer. The converter is off (no 120vac from inverter).

With the engine running at 1000 rpms, verify shore voltage with meter, connect to shore outlet. Wait the 2min 15sec until shore power is energizing the uwave. Shut off the engine. This prevents the converter from sending the house battery a high amp jolt.
The other direction can be the same in reverse: engine on and wait until louder sound occurs then set to 1000 rpms, then disconnect shore power. This should dispel any myths.

"House battery getting a high amp volt" When I hook up, my house batteries are full from being charged by the engine and usually it goes to float, or at worse, absorption for a short time.

Hi Tom,

After engine start, the ECM commands a low compression mode (lower sound level)then after stabilization has occurred, the ECM commnands high compression mode(higher sound level). Someone out ther can explain it better - I'm sure.

Some folks do not immediately transfer power, some have appliances and other devices on which could be using both battery banks for unknown periods of time, so the converter amp jolt of 160+ amps occurs.

Fred, your response regarding connecting to shore power was unusal to say the least. Does CC provide instructions regarding the procedure? We have always killed everything before any change to a new power source and have had no problems. Lead-acid batteries are currently installed. Thanks for all your great responses. John 2002 Allure

Hi John,

There are no warning placards, so any approach is possible, CCI had to make it fail safe plus there are safety codes that have to be adhered to. As for a procedure, there may be one in the binder(s).
My approach enhances battery life.

Hi Fred, Just curious as to year and model of your coach. Is your converter and inverter separate? We do not have our coach running when we plug in or unplug to or from shore power. We turn off the breaker, plug in, then turn on the breaker. The Surgeguard takes over at that point. We do not have any thing on as far as appliances while transferring power. Is it written in a manual or paper that it should be done the way you described? Thanks, CandaceAffinity 6370

Hi Candice,

The converter is the technical name for the box which contains an inverter and a battery charger.

I have used the procedure posted ever since delivery in July of 2000.
There are no placards warning about what you have to do first - the system must be made fail safe and conform to safety stantards both at the federal and state level. There may be a procedure in the binder(s) that came with your coach. The Surgeguard is the same as a circuit breaker with an added timer so there is no need to turnoff breakers.

Thanks, Fred for the info. I am planning to call a CC phone tech to see what they recommend and get their input. We have driven a coach since 97 and have never done connecting or disconnecting shore power the way you discribed. I will report back after talking with Tony, Doug or some other CC tech. I will also see if I can find anything in a binder. Maybe we have been doing it wrong all these years! Happy Holidays, Candace
