dash radio

Yahoo Message Number: 14030
After reading all these posts with real problems, I wonder if some one can suggest something I can do about my dash AM radio, which will not recieve for beans. The FM works fine, but I am a talk radio freak. The coach, a 2000 Allure has a single antenna, which I guess is for the CB also. I checked the cable behind the radio and it seem ok.

Any thoughts?

Hi Avery,

Consider this. First, find out if it's the radio or the antenna/ coupler/cabling. To do this, get a cheap car radio antenna from Walmart and try it connected directly to the radio. Tune in a weak station. Both the radio and CB are connected to the same antenna with a coupler.

If poor reception is as before, the radio is suspect.
The other 3 also are suspect. It could be as simple as adjusting the coupler on the radio side. For local stations the FM really doesn't need much of an antenna, cabling, etc but the AM does. Prime suspect is the coupler (it's actually a trap to keep the CB from blowing the front end of the radio when the CB is keyed).
Might try a resistance check of the cabling, especially between shield and center conductor. It does take some ingenuity in doing the diagnostics with trying different connections. These, I believe, could be the cause assuming the voltage to the radio is over +12 vdc.

coach2099,

I too like to listen to talk radio which is almost exclusively on AM. I rate my AM radio in CC only ok. Because of this I have begun using XM radio. They have a pretty good talk radio lineup and no reception issues. This may not have been the answer you wanted but may offer an alternative.

Climb roof. Unscrew antenna from it's mount. Clean threads. Screw it back in - tighten.

Check the manual that came with your radio and see if there is a fine tuning adjusting screw for AM. I'm not sure about these newer radios but the older ones had the screw somewhere in the back.
