Need Feedback

We are looking for some feedback from all of you experience RVers on the benefits (or not), of private camping resort ownership, i.e. Coast-to-Coast, Thousand Trails, etc. We have just purchased our first motorhome (40' Inspire), and are eager to find the best spots to visit. Since a 40' coach will not fit into most state campgrounds, finding a space for this size coach could present a problem. Being newbies, we can use and are open to lots of advice. We will be traveling cross country in May (Oregon to Michigan) and would appreciate any advice you are willing to share on your experiences. We are also eager to meet lots of nice people, which we have been told, are RVers. Thank you to those of you that are willing to help us get our feet wet.

Hi Mary,

Membership campgrounds...you must make the decision if they fit into your camping lifestyle. Check the Thousand Trails site
www.1000trails.com to see if the campgrounds are located in places where you will camp. I bought a resale membership that is the Alliance membership. I can move from one TT campground to another with no time between stays. Many of the memberships require that members stay out of the system for a week after a two-week stay. So, check the type of membership you are purchasing, whether you buy a new membership or a resale.

I have had mostly positive experiences in the TT system and will probably spend a lot more time at TT campgrounds this year than last.

Hi Mary,

Membership in such a group I feel depend on how adventurous you are. When we purchased our 40' Allure (1st coach) we thought we would have problems in finding campgrounds that could accomodate us. Just the opposite has been our experience so far. I retire last March and two days after I retired we headed West for 3 1/2 months. Granted we found some campgrounds that we would not stay in, but for the most part we used the various guides and discount groups such as PassPort and had no problems in finding places. Just to say we did it, we even stayed in a Wal-Mart and a Sams parking lots. Not my kind of place, but we did it. The best of all of them was the Arizona desert during April when the flowers are in bloom.
We just found a place to get off the highway and stayed for three nights dry camping. If you are military or retired military, many of the Family Camps are great.

SO, you see it depends....how you want to travel. I could never see my wife and I being tied to one or two places and staying in one place for long periods. Part of the fun to us is keeping the coach on the move and seeing whats around the next curve in the road.

Have fun.....

Jim: I hope our experiences are as positive as yours have been. I appreciate your feedback. We are not military so that option is out. What is the Passport discount program?

Congratulations on the Inspire - we have one and love it - when we first started in 1998 we bought Passport but never used it - at first we stayed in private campgrounds and still do occasionally - however we prefer state or county parks - or wherever we decide to stop for the evening - if we find a vacant lot we usually ask permission from a neighboring business - we have done that several times with no problems -but these might be just overnight stops - two examples - being follow our nose with no specific schedule and always no planning we went to Calgary during the Stampede - all campgrounds were full except for one about 30 miles from Calgary - we drove downtown and stayed in a parking lot dry camping for four days 3 blocks from the stampede. In Sandpoint, ID we parked and took the jeep looking for all the campgrounds - not finding one we liked we thought we would just go on north - but just outside of town we saw an abandoned Wal-Mart next to a Motel 6 - We first parked in front - but the next day pulled in behind away from the traffic next to the Motel 6 - we stayed a week as it was private and safe - found a place nearby that we could get water and empty our tanks (no charge) - and had Wi-Fi from the Motel 6 - what a deal - By the way the new Wal-Mart there was a couple of blocks away - but it was too crowded with other 'campers'
