help with excess vacuum showing on air filter minder cummins 8.3 me

Maybe someone out there has solved this problem i'm having so I don't have to go crazy myself! On a '98 intrique with cummins 8.3 mechanical engine I installed the banks stinger system, it really increased the performance, especially taking off from a lite, or going up a hill. Any way after the installation the filter minder gauge showed 20 in., right up near the top, so I assumed that with the stingers new larger turbo the old air filter was not clean enough. After some research I found out that the original large round air filter had some air restriction even when new compared to the oil impregenated air filters like k&n and others make, with supposedly twice the allowable air flow. So I bought one at the Perry convention last week. But low and behold the filter minder is still going up to 20 in after being reset with the 175$ oil type filter. I've checked for any restrictions in the piping and housings, etc, all looks great. I called banks power and country coach, and they never heard of this problem. Any of you guys out there have any ideas? thanks gary phillips

Hi Gary,

The sensor for the minder gauge is located generally about half way between the air filter and the turbo, it is nothing more than a small pipe with a calibrated hole to match the engine/turbo combination. I suspect your new banks system has created more vacuum. Using a calibrated vacuum gauge, a measurement can be made of your system and someone elses for comparison. If this is true, you should be provided with a pipe with a smaller hole or you could consider replacing the minder with a vacuum gauge. Check with the minder manufacturer. Be careful that no unfiltered air gets into the system.
