New Cell Phone World

Yahoo Message Number: 16011
Looking for input regarding cell phone service as it relates to RV travel in the west/ northwest parts of the US, Mexico and Canada.
Cingular recently purchased ATT Wireless and plans to phase out the digital phone service of all merged towers. As they break, they get taken out. They also stopped allowing any plan changes for ATT customers. Those of us with ATT digital phones and antennas on the RV have had pretty good coverage in remote areas. The new standard at Cingular (and the world) is GSM which does not permit antennas, boosters, etc. Our choice now is either to have diminished digital service, change to GSM, or go to Verizon. The Cingular coverage map indicates western coverage of primarily interstates and metro areas. The plus is a North American plan which includes the US, Mexico and Canada. Has anyone studied this in detail with any recommendations?

Hi Richard,

You might consider joining these two Yahoo groups for added information - internetbycellphone and RV _communications.

Richard,

You stated that "GSM does not permit antennas, boosters, etc".
GSM is digital and is supported by boosters such as Digital Antenna's DA4000SBR and the included rooftop antenna. I do not understand what you meant by your statement. Could you elaborate.

[Country-Coach-Owners] Re: New Cell Phone World Barry,

Two Cingular retail shops told me that there were no Cingular GSM phones available that had jacks for external antennas such as the Wilson rooftop unit that I now have on my coach. Other comments on this thread indicate that there may in fact be some. Any input?

Richard,

Most new cell phones don't have external antenna jacks. That's why about one year ago Digital Antenna came out with their wireless amplifier that solves the "wired tether to the amplifier" problem.

Your cell phone thinks the amplifier is the tower. Multiple cell phones are now possible. Same basic concept as wireless laptops or cordless phones.

Barry, did you install the Digital Antenna system on your coach? It looks really interesting but I'm not sure how I would mount the marine style antenna that comes in the RV kit or the mag mount antenna that comes in the car kit. I looked at their other antennas and they all appear to be marine or mag mount. My concern with marine mount is that I don't know any way to spring them so that overhanging branches don't rip it off.

Bob,

The RV antenna comes with a mounting bracket. The provided antenna is not that long but it's not flexible so branches would be a problem. The outside antenna and the inside antenna must be as far apart as possible. I am currently in test mode trying to determine the minimum antenna separation.

Barry , remeber that D.A. says a minimum of 30 ft. and a " solid wall " . ( What would that be on a fiberglass bodied coach??)
