Tunnels and Propane Restrictions

I was wondering how RV owners try to insure they are not going to suddenly come upon a tunnel or other location that has a propane restriction. Is there a source of such information?

This problem is particularly touchey when using a GPS nav system. We have a Carin system and it does not have the ability to decern the difference between a passenger car and an RV carrying propane. I have been put in the bind twice by allowing it to 'guide' me.
I have yet to find a source that shows only prohibited routes, so to speak, except the good old road atlas coupled to good map reading talents.

Anxious to see what comes of this.

One of the navigation tools I use very successfully is CoPilot 8 from TravRoute. The current version touts a feature that "enables Propane Restrictions to completely avoid tunnels that prohibit propane tanks."

Concerning tunnels, we have used the Truckers Atlas which you can buy at some truck stops. It shows where hazardous cargo, restricted areas etc are.

I've been reading the posts pertaining to propane restrictions and am very confused. I was under the impression that all tunnels on the interstate system had propane restrictions. When I first (a year ago) started RV'ing, I was concerned with the propane issue. None of the RV dealerships could give me an answer, so I contacted the state. I was told that the restriction only pertained to commercial transportation and that an RV was not an issue. This made sense as most of the diesel engine manufacturers are coming out with propane injection manifolds for semi's, which certainly would not be cost effective if every "Big Rig" had to detour every tunnel in the country.

So ... now I am worried .... do I, or do I not go through a tunnel?

We live in Hampton Roads VA. with six tunnels, all will allow Propane after you shut it off at the tank. Since 9/11 VDOT workers in Orange Suites come out of the building and write down your tag # and want you to show them the tank and make sure it is off. They use to just stick their head out of their warm/cool shack and give you the hand signal asking if you "cut" the Propane.
Baltimore, MD and NY have tunnels that don't allow any Propane. We found that out the hard way. Never again, they put up lots of signs to warn you but we were so use to going through and cutting the supply, we thought that's what they ment, wrong.

Plan your routs well in MD, NJ and NY. In VA you want have any problems.
