House Battery replacement suggestions ??

Well it appears that the time has come to replace the house batteries.
I have read numerous posts on batteries. What is the current consensus on replacement ??

I have a 01' Intrigue that has 2 12-volt batteries in it now. I do not want to "re-wire" for 2 6-volt batteries. I have considered AGM's but am not convinced that there is a positive return for the additional cost.
So I think it will be just another set of 12-volt deep cycle batteries. Any arguments to the contrary ?? If not, any brands seem to be holding up better than the others ?? Thanks,

I think the AGM are worth the extra cost.
Have you looked at all the pluses, charge faster, hold charge longer, no maintance, if you shop around you can get them for about $400.00 ea Charlie & Lorraine Zecman

I am with Charlie on this one. I replaced my original cranking battery after having it for two years with a Lifeline AGM. Then I replace my coach batteries with the Lifeline AGM about three years ago. No water to add, long lasting charge etc. etc. Would do it again without any resevation. When one puts the kind of money in these coaches what is another $800-$1100. To be honest I do not remember how mine cost but I believe it was a little less that 400 a piece.

OK, if I go with the AGM style batteries do I have to alter my battery compartment ?? It looks like Lifeline AGM batteries are about a half-inch longer than factory installed batteries but it is hard to know for sure until one removes the old batteries.
Someone out there done this before ?? Looking at the weight of these things I DO NOT want to move them unnecessarily.

The AGM should fit in the same rack you have, where you buy the batteries they should install them for you, and dispose of your old.

You can have all 4 batteries replaced at any CCI rally for around $500, of course that is the original type and they install them and haul away the old ones. Don't know what they charge for AGMs but a rally would be a good place to do them also since you can have any reprograming done by CC.

Please consider the following before laying out all that money for AGM or new 8D batteries. People tried to convince me about ganged 6 volt units and my attitude was almost like yours. Not so after some research and seeing in another coach what was necessary to make the change.

No other batteries are as much bang for the buck as the golf cart type units.. That said I compared the ampherehours. I may be off a bit but the standard 8D is about 105 at 75 amps. The standard golf cart around 110 at 75 but for about $85.00 each (4x85=$340.00) plus a few cable modifications you are ahaed of the game. Now the really good news the heavy duty golf cart battery is about 140 at 75. This means you can have about 35-40 percent more capacity than when you had 8 D units as standardly furnished by Country coach. AGM last about the same amount of time as properly maintained flooded lead acid. If you want a picture of what the 4-6 volt units look like in the bay I will be glad to send a picture.

There are also 180 amp versions but they are 1 inch bigger and would require tray modification to do.

Interstate Batteries have the standard and heavy Duty. Their batteries are manufactured by Johnson Controls which is the same as what I think Less Schwab sells at CCI rallies

I replaced my two house batteries with 6 golf cart batteries so got extra capacity and total cost was only around $420.00 for all 6 batteries plus the cost of the cables to tie the batteries together.
After two years the batteries are still functioning as they should.
At the 5.5 year point my chassis battery is about to give up the ghost and I will probably replace that one with a $99.00 Champion from Sams Club, it has greater cranking amps capability than did the original issue battery from Les Schwab at half the cost.

I would like to vote for T105 Golf cart batteries. I have used them and had good luck. Also, I have met others who have used the same batteries with solar for up to 10 years before replaceing them.

If you really want top-of-the-line lead acid batteries, take look at "Rolls-Surette", considered to be the premier, at least by live aboard cruising yacht owners to power their house battery circuits.
In lead acid batteries you pay for the pounds of lead. A Rolls #12HHG6-8D weighs 183 lbs wet, has an honest 275 amp hr for 20 hrs and comes with a 7 year warranty. Be prepared to pay $$.... on my live-aboard cruising boat 15 years ago I paid around $250-300 each.
I carried four of them. Don't know what they cost now.
