DVD-VCR

I have the Bose system in my coach which will play DVD's through the front TV only.I also have a VCR which will play through front and/or rear TV's. I want to be able to play DVD's in the rear while watching satellite TV in the front, and it occurred to me that I could possibly change out the VCR for a DVD player. What I don't know is whether I can simply disconnect the VCR and hook up the DVD in it's place or if wiring changes are required. Has anyone done this, and if so did you find a DVD player the same size as the VCR installed as original eqpt ( in my case this is a 4 "by 15 " opening)?

That's an interesting idea to use a VCR/DVD combo unit in place of the VCR. I presume that the RF out works for both the VCR and DVD sides of the combo unit.

Most (all?) DVD only players I have seen do not have a RF out (antenna type coax) connection, and the substitution would not work for those.

Wish I had thought of that earlier!

Last weekend as part of our transition from one state to another I packed up our VHS collection. There must be well over one hundred, most we taped direct from the TV.

Remember when blank VHS tapes cost $16 each!!!
Now we hardly ever play any of them. In fact I should really send them to the SA or Goodwill but then I'm a bit of a pack rat so they just get moved from home to home. This is why we can never be full timers, there isn't a coach large enough.
In recent times we have found that local libraries are gradually building sizeable stocks of DVD's and this can work for short trips and it is free of charge but there is a limit in time and quantity. Our other source has been NETFLIX. Great for selecting movies on their web site but limited to three disks at a time. Cost not great if using the service frequently.
Looks like there might be an opportunity for a new distribution program for RV folk.
Maybe a free one for one DVD volunteer exchange program at club rally's. The RV park office would be a great spot to exchange but no doubt many parks would want to charge for the service.
It just seems there should be a way to get more mileage out of our DVD's.........

Ray, did you find a DVD/VCR combo unit the same size as the VCR you removed, and, if so, what brand was it? I gather from your message there was no new wiring involved, but please confirm this.

Thanks,

Walt, Buddy Gregg installed mine when I bought the coach, and they removed the thin panel infront and made it slightly longer. The unit was a samsung and at the time there was not many available,I've noticed several more brands available and they look smaller then mine. Wiring was the same.

Walt,

Does your switch box have a place for DVD in?. If not a switchbox change would solve the problem.

Ron, there is no space on the switch box for a DVD. I am using auxiliary for the satellite. I've given up on piping the Bose to the rear because of its external speakers. I don't have the electronics acumen to rig up rear speakers and don't want to do anything to abandon the front Bose speakers which are excellent. My best bet is to do what another owner did and replace the VCR with a combination DVD/VCR unit. Thanks, though, for your input.
