Door Wind Noise

Does anyone have any hints on how to reduce the door wind noise. At about 60 mph or when there is a strong head wind the door wind noise intensity increases drastically. I've tried putting some extra sealer around the edges but nothing has worked so far. Any specifics????

Are you sure it is the door? I have a wind noise, which I thought was the door but have found out it is the windshield and the way it is put in the gasket/body. I would have the WS remounted but there is a repair in it and I am afraid that if I have it reseated, the thing would crack and then I would have to replace it. To make sure it is the door, have someone put masking tape around the door frame once you are in the coach and then drive it. You might be surprised.

awning bracket by the door reduces wind noise considerably. They say to

just slit the insulation and slide it over the awning bracket.

I have purchased the insulation but have not had a chance to try it yet.

I have been using the pipe insulation for two years and about 13,000 miles. I hild it on with several velcro staps. It works like a charm.

Realize this is a tad bit of an old thread, but it was the one that seemed close to our problem. While I'll keep searching/surfing, thought I'd ask if those with the same basic front door config as our 04 Allure, may have found the fix for this??
So far, I had about three-four hours of good techs at Holland Motorhomes in San Diego, try to solve this. Some things are better, but still get the 'whistle' wind sound, when the wind hits at the right angle. Guys, so loud that you might as well turn off the stereo. So loud, my Bounder V10 was sometimes quieter then the allure...

Post work review with Holland:

Last bit of info, and some speculation on my part:

The top and bottom of the door frame, where they were attached to the side door frames (not doors, but like the door jambs on a pre-hung door), looked to have been worked on. The sound is so loud with the whistle, that I would take at trip to anyplace that could work magic on making it go away. This is our long term coach, and I'd like to get this resolved for over the next 20 years of usage...
(Note: The two 20-30 min test drives, were in the early AM without any winds to detect the 'whistle'. Noted the wind sound some, but assumed this was a weather/stripping door adjustment only item.

This is going to sound real strange, but on my 06 I had some sound not really a whistle but certainly air passing. I did all that you have done to the door, and also went to Holland in SD. One day I noticed the rubber molding around the inside of the window next to the door had disappeared. When I replaced same and glued it in tight, and I mean tight my sound stopped. Sorry I wish I could be more factual, but I checked the window to issuer the seal, and it was sealed, why the rubber and glue stopped the wind I really don't know. Also I had to seal for about the second or third time the door awing. It leaked water. This time I got inside and that has seemed to work. I also put a door stop on the bottom of the screen, that stopped the rattle. All in all the coach is pretty tight now.

Have someone use a stethoscope while you are driving to pinpoint the noise. (I removed the bell and replaced it with a 2 foot plastic tube to extend the reach and allow an exact pinpoint.)

You might be surprised at the location/source.
When you're finished, wear it around your neck to look cool and to attract the chicks.

This is a real long shot, but I seem to remember side windows that have the drains at the bottom have covers on them, if a cover is missing it will sometimes case a whistle.
If you think it is the door, try this, get in the coach have someone use painters masking tape 2" wide (the blue masking tape works good) and completely tape the door closed and go for a ride. If the noise stops you know it is the door seal, if it does not that is not it. Then take the tape and start taping different areas until the whistle stops. At least then you will know where it is coming from. The whistle may not be coming from where it sounds like it is.

Mikee is on to the solution. I have a 07 Inspire and have wind noise around the door from time to time. My wind noise depends on wind direction for the most part. I thought the noise was caused by the side view mirror. Moved that around, no change. Taped all the way around the door and no change. Then I taped over the door latch and bingo, noise gone. The opening of the door latch faces forward and catches the wind. So now I have two pieces of tape stuck to the dash just inside the door. If it's windy when we travel I cover the door latch and problem solved. I would like to find a small plastic deflector of some sort to attached to the door just forward of the latch but have not found anything.

Catch all thanks for the things to look at. We have a 3K trip coming up at the end of next week, while we are testing our new/old rig on our first long trip, we'll listen and play with tape along the way. Would have never considered the door handle, but will now.
The sound to me, from the driver's seat, sounds up high and to the front side of the door. Not easy to tell for sure. We'll take a long wrapping paper cardboard tube, for my DW to listen in thru. Sounding up high, makes me think: -over door awning

-top of door vacuum pulled away some from door stripping -windshield seal
-mirror

We'll have fun along the way... We'll also test the RoadKings and MCU's on this trip. Heck, we'll perhaps forget about that four letter word for a few weeks too:)! Smitty

Finding the root cause is the key. Process of trial and error. From my research and input to this same question. I would also have the door handle taped up too. Blue tape is easier to remove. Go drive, if sound continues, add tape around the window and gasket, repeat. If no sound from the first test, remove the door tape, and see if sound still is gone.
On our Allure, I had the door adjusted to a very tight latching (we pull in on the door to deadbolt). I also added to the top 1/4 of the sides and top, 3/16th weather stripping. Also check where the hinges are, add stripping if needed. We did the thin plastic pull test too. 6-8" wide by one foot strip of plastic drop cloth. Close in parts of the door, and pull on the plastic. No to little resistance was an area for more stripping.

We still have wind noise, but much less.

Could be from any one of a number of sources including the drip caps on the windows if any are missing, gaps around the head/fog lights in the front gap, out-of-alignment genny compartment, etc.

I had the same problem and discovered that the door was not shutting all the way. I had to slam the door hard to get it to fully close. That seemed to fix my problem.

We have the same high pitch whistle. This is the only temporary fix we could use to stop the horrendous sound.
We took a wooden clothes pin apart and inserted the wooden part as a wedge between the screen and the metal frame about 1 foot from the bottom of the screen. If it still persists I also insert a thin piece of cardboard.
I have my wife do this while I am driving in order to get the right position of everything until the whistle stops. Rubber seals do not work I tried it already. Good Luck!!!

I had the same issue and found the door frame to be working loose so I tightened all the screws and the ones stripped installed a larger size all around the frame. Then I had to grind down the washer at the base of the post that the door latches to so I could move it and the post in a fraction of an inch. This caused the door to jam up against the plate the screen door latches to, so I had to grind that down a bit, too. Well, after a couple of hours of experimenting I got out my 6 ft level and found the frame wasn't plumb. So Decided to leave well enough alone. No whistles, no leaks, and you don't have to slam the door, but unless a window is open in the coach you do have to be firm with closing the door. It won't close with its own momentum.

Just went and looked at the screen door. So you wedge the screen towards the frame jamb, using the outside door as the back point. Exactly opposite of my question...

Yes this is right it pushes the screen tight to the outer door. It works for me why I don't know and you might have to fool around to position it in the door. If anyone knows why this works let me know I don't know but the noise stops.

Dan and Gary have correctly hit on one solution for the door wind noise problem. I was discussing this problem with Eric Olstrom this summer. He said many of the coach doors have a double latch mechanism and "you have to slam it pretty good to engage the second latching function."

Worked for me.

I do not know if all our doors have this function and Eric didn't say.

Fixed the door noise problem on my ol' magna by adjusting the striker plates for the dead-bolt and coach door lock...
Now, closing the door firmly (without slamming) eliminates the door wind noise...

On our 04 Allure, the best tech at Holland's service spent three hours adjusting the latch and dead bolts and hinges. Hard slam required, and about a 50% improvement.
I added some weather stripping to the top part of the door, and hinge area. Helped a bit more.
Looking at the door jamb, it's been worked on by someone. All four corners show signs of work. Nothing in the records to say who did this. Holland service manager said that several coaches were sold new this way. I'm noy sold on this, as at the new cost price, I would have rejected the coach if attempted to be delivered like this. (like buying a new car, with primer showing in places).
IMO, this jamb was warped, and attempted to be repaired. I feel the top of the door is somewhat pulled away from the door jamb. More so at speed, when I suspect the wind drag is 'pulling' on the door. This opens up enough of a gap, to beak the seal to the door.
I read somewhere that a bad lot of sub component doors had problems. Not just a CC problem..
I'll try the close pin wedge trick, see if this helps. Probably add more stripping too.
