Electric step change

We want electric step to only retract when Allison engages a gear. Too many times the step has retracted when it should have been out.
Do you have a way to know what wire from Allison signals that Allison is in gear? The in gear signal is used to trigger alarm of leveling system, so it does exist, but where is it documented?

We have some step questions also, maybe we can combine ...
First, I was all exited about all the schematics that are included in the big book, but now that I have looked thru them, not sure they are complete or accurate. I did use them to get the sat to feed into the 'component 1' input in the front TV, after reading them and the Amp manual.

I don't know where the step ciruit would be ... chassis or house.
The chassis schematics are almost impossible to read so I am not sure how much info can be gleaned here.
I got the step to stay in when the door was opened, pretty scary, and not come in when we took off (someone flagged me down when we left Lazy Days). I am very intersted it tracking this down also.

I didn't know the steps were tied to the transmission at all, I thought they just came in when the ignition switch came on. I have not figured out what is computer controlled and what is just hard wired logic.

I hope some experts jump in here ...

YOUR STEP SHOULD COME IN WHEN THE KEY IS OR THE ENG IS RUNNING, SO IT IS WITH OUR 02 MAGNA, WE HAVE A SWITCH BY THE DOOR WHEN UP THE STEP WEILL STAY OPEN WHEN THE DOOR IS OPEN OR CLOSED, BUT IF YOU START THE ENG THE STEP WILL GO IN.

HOPE THIS HELPED

It must be the week for step troubles. I'm currently neck deep in this same problem.

I have found / been talked through this with CC tech support. As has been explained, when parked, ignition off and the switch in the off position you should be able to open the door and close the door with the steps staying out.

When the ignition is turned on, another circuit overrides the step switch and retracks the steps. There are supposed to be two 12 volt feeds to the step motor switch(3 wires, one ground, and two power).

My problem is that the steps are getting constant power from the ignition side. I have been told it's a bad ignition relay. I have as yet not been able to find the ignition relay. I'm told it's in the front drivers bay. Anyone know where ??

Eric, I think the wire from the ignition side is 68. Don't hold me to that as I'm not at the coach. I'll go work some more on it tomorrow and confirm the wire number. However I have a 2001 Intrigue so maybe the numbers are different ??

You should be able to park, turn your ignition off, turn the step switch to the off position and the steps should stay out and not retract. If they are coming in every time you may also be having the same problem as I'm seeing. I'm guessing that you are getting constant 12 volt power to the switch via the ignition circuit even though the ignition switch is in the off position.

John,

All my past electric step problems have been with the little push button switch that's in the door. The switch's housing is exposed to outside water and road dirt.

After multiple trips to my dealer (and one to JC) with always short-lived solutions, I removed the switch myself and noticed that it is exposed to the elements. I cleaned it and enclosed it as well as I could with electrical tapes. I haven't had a repeat of my problems in over a year, and if I do, I now know it isn't that hard to fix.
PS. The switch also controls the step light, thus I didn't expect it at first, as it was usually making the light go on and off when pushing and releasing it, while it didn't make the step go in and out.
After looking at the switch, I believe it has a normally-open circuit for one, and a normally closed for the other, thus it can make one work but not the other.

Michael & John,

John, the contacts on front edge of door must also be good for door position to control step position. That is assuming your coach is like mine. Step control is in step, it just looks for switches to signal need to extend or retract. Connection to a computer would not be useful. Step is connected to ignition switch, door contacts & hand switch near door, not to transmission as I propose.
Michael, front drivers bay would be the storage in front of tire on road side of coach. If you have wire numbers the relay should be easy to identify.

Our coach step need not retract when key is on. Will step hit a curb because key is on?

The step has twice caused injury by retracting when key or switch by door was switched. We would risk damage to step if need be, to avoid another personal injury.

If the connection of step to ignition switch is moved from ignition to Allison in gear signal, half the problem is gone. Step switch by door can be disconnected or changed to a locking switch.
After these two changes, step will still be retracted while the coach rolls, but step will not again retract while in use or fail to be out when expected.

Do you have Allison WTEC3 control wiring diagrams?

Thanks,
