05 INSPIRE - ALLISON MH-3000 HIGH TEMPERATURE

My low power issue on the C-9 was resolved by CAT with a new flash and replacing all turbo related components. Now, according to the SilverLeaf, the engine develops 402 HP and at 1400-1500 RPM, 1,100 pounds of torque.

The problem I noticed going up-hill is that the transmission temperature indicated by the SilverLeaf is between 224 and 234 (run for quite a while at 234). The analog gauge on the dash almost pegged. The Allison service center says this is normal temperature, the transmission did not show faults or derate. I am, however, concerned.

Any experiences, ideas or suggestions?

We are having the same issues and concerns. Our 05 Inspire operating tempeture is continually running at 230+. Called CC with concern and they told me that this was normal operating temp? I am thinking I need to take a trip to the CAT service center.

We have noticed some higher temperatures as well but have not had much of a chance lately to use the coach given all the other issues we have been having. I just thought that the temperature gauge was a bit off since most have told me that CC gauges are not very accurate. I want to install a silver leaf once we get things worked out to find out the real values.

I spoke with both, CC and Allison Service center in denver.
According to both sources, 234 is within normal operating range. I will just monitor it.

I would never accept tran's temps that high regardless what CC or Allison says. I would install the largest cooler-fan assembly I could buy. Trans temps should stay below 200* for long life!

According to Allison and CC, installing another fan is not feasible. The current fan serves both, engine and transmission and is controlled by the engine ECU.

I hooked up my Silverleaf VMSpc this weekend and we went out on a short 1 hour drive which went through the Cajon Pass which goes up to 4000 feet. I turned on the data logging on a 10 second interval to capture various data points to begin to understand the operating ranges of the various components as well as to calibrate the dash gauges against the actual digital values.

As one would expect I saw some variance in the gauge readings. The transmission was too high by about 15 degrees and the engine temperature was about 5 degrees too low. Depending upon the range, starting out cool the values are way off but as they get into their operating raqnge they are a bit closer.
At any rate, the transmission values were no higher than 208 though it appears from the graph I produced from the data that it was trending upward slightly. The outside tempeature was around 92 degrees. I will be out again this weekend and will be pulling a trailer so there will be additional load on the transmission. It will be interesting to see, though I will be on different roads this time, I will be driving for about 3 hours this time. Should indicate how the transmission and engine handles the temperatures since it will again be in the middle to high 90's for this trip.

We were just at Beaudry in Tucson getting our hydraulic line fixed that broke causing the front passenger slide to deploy. While we were there they told us that we should be prepared to return for a retrofit to the transmission as soon as the technical letter comes out. It will require an 8 hour job to put a cooling fan in the transmission location to keep it cooler. Not real sure exactly the full extent of the job but they said they will have to open the transmission.
This was 3 days ago and they said probably in late August or September and they will have to order the parts.

I'd be curious as to how you recalibrate the dash guages. Mine are as much as 10-15 degrees off from the Silverleaf readings. Cat and CC both said to rely on the Silverleaf. I reached the point where I try not to look at the dash temp guages; they just make me nervous!

Sorry for the slow response. I may have used a poor choice of wards about calibration. What I meant was I could calibrate my mind as to what the analog gauges were reading against the Silverleaf. I have tended to look at the silverleaf anyway but I was just rying to understand just how far off these really were. It varied according to where in the range the temperatures were. They were not as far off as I first thought once they go into the operating range, but nonetheless they were off.

The dash gauges read temperature from a diferent point than the Silverleaf. That is why the diference.

Techs at CC, Cat and Silverleaf all stated that the length of the wire covering the distance from the read point to the dash is such that there is significant resistance developed, hence it contributes to the inaccuracy, plus they are in fact read at different points. I guess you could check this until you were ready for the 'rubber room'. The one significant factor is that there is no indication whatsoever of any overheating or excessive temperature (on my coach), and CAT's assurance that the computer will shut the engine down before doing damage helps a little. That leaves the tranny, and close examination of the fluid does not indicate any overheating there. No discoloration, odd odor (burned smell) or change in viscosity.
I still think the fact that the dash guages are inaccurate (they say) creates a conundrum that should be rectified for the $$$ involved in the equipment.
