Defrost/Cooling/Heating

We have a 98 Allure and had heating/cooling problems and traced it down to the vacuum pump pressure switch. The pump would not turn on so the controls were not effective. Sometimes when it did turn on it would not turn off which is hard on the pump.

On the Allure you can hear the pump start when the engine is first turned on. The pump is located in the left front forward storage area. It will run for 15-20 seconds and then turn off. Periodically it will cycle on and off. If it does not come on the dampers for air and cooling will not work correctly and the efficiency of the heating and cooling goes way down.

I have also noticed that the heating/cooling is much better when the coach is not moving.

My pump would run all the time so, not checking into the pressure switch, I wired in a manual off-on switch and turn it on only when requiring dash heating or cooling. Am I asking for trouble down the road?

With my 99 Allure I see also the heating/cooling blows harder when the coach is stopped or moving slowly.

The in line manual switch sounds like a good idea. You might want to check a manuf. to see if the pump can run continuously or at least for a few hours at a time.

I had the factory check the system for vacuum leaks when there for other work. They were not too concerned that the pump ran all the time and, to my consternation later, never mentionmed the possibility of a faulty pressure switch. The pump seems to run quite well for long times. I drove from Ohio there and back; it just makes noise with the ignition on and before starting the engine.
