Follow Up on Strange C13 Engine Problems

Yahoo Message Number: 18110
Several weeks back I posted on a C13 engine problem which cut the engine on and off while climbing a grade in Arizona (no codes were logged). After extensive testing at CAT including a 300 mile drive by the technicians, CAT determined that all was OK with the engine on this problem. I did get a new turbo due to poor engine performance.
Country Coach stepped in quickly and sent an wiring guru to Phoenix who found a poor power connection (1+ volt loss accross the connector) on the power source for the ECM from the transmission. The thinking is that it worked most of the time until temperatures and loads were high leading to lower voltages and ECM cutout. The ECM just assumed the ignition switch was turned off, so no code/faults. While I hate having these types of problems, I'm pleased with CC stepping up on the problem quickly.

We're off to Nascar in the California Speedway infield this weekend.

Hi Ron,

At a recent SW CCI gathering in Buellton CA, one coach owner spoke about the same problem you had. It turned out to be a loose connection on the alternator output, the bus voltage would intermittantly drop to battery voltage. Consider verifying all the connections between the alternator and the battery.

I had the same problem. After being towed in and having an alternator shipped out to the boonies, the alternater people and the CC techs convinced Interstate Truck to do more troubleshooting. Sure enough, while running a continutity test on the wire from the battery to the alternator they found the problem. Someone had stripped one end of the wire leaving on the insulation and had installed the shunt over the top. Needless to say I was not getting all the charge voltage needed to keep the batttery charged and therefore the transmission shut us down. Kudos to the CC tech for sticking with us.
