MotoSAT DataStorm/Hughes Update

First of all, let me apologize to all of the Homecoming attendees. We had planned to do a seminar there but we had to unexpectedly leave to assist with re-establishing communications here in the New Orleans area.

Hughes has come out with a new series of modems called DW7000 modems.
They look just like the 6000's but are providing much faster speeds at lower costs.

Previously, the base Direcway service would provide 30-60K up and 400- 600K down for $99/month. With the 7000 modems we are seeing upload speeds in the 150-200K range with download speeds at about 1000K. The service cost has been reduced to $80/month.
Current Direcway users can also update to the new modem for about $700 and sign up for the new $80/month plan without affecting your contract.

You do realize that you are paying $99/mo for the EXACT same service that fixed DirecWay customers are paying $59/mo for. Has a reasonable explanation ever been given for this? Tom Fisher

Bill,

Three years ago I put a Direcway dish on my warehouse. I was told I'd get upload speeds of 30-90k, but never got better than 17k, which was about half the speed of a poor phone line, and inadequate for tying in to a remote computer with "gotomypc". I had to switch to a microwave provider. How does this "new and improved" technology address the latency issue? I'd really like to be able to put a DataStorm dish on my motorhome and have it work for two way communication.

The latency problem won't be be solved any time soon because the signal must travel a minimum of 50,000 miles(25K up, 25K down) before it can reach the ground based system.

Even at the speed of light(~186Kmi/sec), this adds at least 0.54 sec to the round trip travel time. Of course IF we could add large storage capacity on the sats to cache frequently accessed data, we might reduce this time by 50%..... an Exabyte server in geosync orbit??
