Step Cover Failure

Well, I think we did something wrong. On a trip last week my copilot stored her shoes on the first step just under the cover. When we arrived at our destination we tried to retract the cover and after retracting about half way it stopped moving. We could see it had caught on the shoes. We removed the shoes but now the cover will not move when the switch is activated. We can hear the motor running so we did not blow a fuse or trip a breaker.
We are looking for advice on where to start on fixing this failure. Our coach is a 98 Intrigue.

Grab the step and give it a nice hard pull to see if that frees it up. We have a 99 Intrigue that has been plagued with stairwell cover problems.

There is a pinion gear, held on with a set screw. It is located in the first compartment drivers side. It is possible that the set screw that holds this gear to the gear motor shaft has come loose. You should be able to get to it from the compartment. Good Luck.

Mike: I've had my cover motor out at least three times in seven years. (Finally decided to abandon the &%$ thing). You can access the entire assembly if you are inclined to venture into some mechanical territory.
Underneath the coach, up front under the steps is a flat sheet metal piece that covers the mechanism. It's pretty easily removed with a long bit extension and a power screwdriver or drill. By removing the cover and taking the primary bolt out, you can free up the cover and if you are ambitious, you can remove the entire assembly for repair.
The wires are coded, both with color and numbering system, so it is easy to reinstall. Everything is pretty easy to each, especially if you drive the front end up on some blocks so you can sit up underneath the front end.
Hopefully you can fix the motor without having to take the assembly out.

My description was not accurate. I can make the cover move manually but I can hear the motor run when I activate the switch. It seems as though the cover is disconnected from the motor. I will try the pinion gear in the morning. Thanks for the advice.

It could be that the rod-end bolt that attaches to the door, became disconnected. I just replaced the microswiches in my step cover and during disassembly, I noticed that the rod-end attach bolt was loose. This is accessed through the previously-mentioned panel underneath the front of the coach. Good luck.
