Simple pleasures

Today on a local radio talk show in Chicago (WGN 720) I heard about something that I

just had to share with anyone who will listen. A caller (several callers) said they were

trying a new tactic to fight unsolicited mail (US post office type) especially credit card

offers. They said they were taking the return envelope's sticking in something without a

name or address and returning it by mail. Someone mentioned this single action will cost

the credit card company 95 cents. I don't know where he got the number, but I know it

will have cost, the postage and handling. So tonight I went through the mail from the last

few days, guess what (7) credit card offers. I must admit it gave me a good feeling

knowing there return would make someone unhappy. Some may think this action is

unwarranted, I myself do not feel guilty at all and I think if a few hundred Internet users

(hopefully a lot more) started to do this, maybe the credit card company's would look at

these bulk mailing differently. If you like this idea pass it on if you don't just delete.

personally, I like the idea, but you might want to check with the post office. There

very well could be a federal statute that would make the intentional mis-use of paid postage return

a crime. Remember, once something goes in the mail, any crime is federal offense.

And even if you don't put your name address in the envelope, it is possible for the post office to track it.

I am new to this group and trying to catch up on all the postings. I read this and had to put my tw cents in. I have been doing this for years. It slows them down, but never stops them. As one reply indicated a concern of doing so is a crime, I don't think so. The postage is a "Business reply". I put everything in it and write a note on the sheet with my name and address to take me off their mailing list. Ususlly works of orther solitications as well.
In addition to this, when my wife or I suscribe to a magazine, we use a different middle initial in our names to identify the magazine. We ask on the form for them not to used our name and address in any marketing efforts. Then when the magazine sells my name and address to another company or a marketing company,I know where they got the information from. The magazine companies are a little surprised when I write them a letter.
