New coach owner - some questions

We recently purchased a 2002 32' Allure coach and are slowly getting familiar with it. This is my first diesel and first class A. I've a few questions I'm hoping someone can help answer:

1. In the front compartment, on the driver's side, there is a switch (black with a clear plastic lever to operate). Any idea what it is for? I've been afraid to touch it!
2. I've been unable to get the main awning to work. Our coach is the J-couch model with two living room slides, and the little cover over the slide-out seems to jam the main awning firmly in place - even when the locks are released. I can't reach the awning when the slide is out, and can't budge it when the slide is in. Any ideas? Have others had this problem?

3. I noticed an electical plug in the last compartment on the passenger side (silver cover) which, I assume, is for connecting to the block heater for cold weather operation to warm the engine. Am I correct, or is the block heater somewhere else or controlled some other way?

4. My temperature gauge shows about 205 on study freeway driving at about 65 mph, and my mileage is only about 7.6 mpg. (350 HP, ISC engine). Mileage seems low and temperature seems high for such a small coach - any ideas what to check - or is this normal?
5. I need to have (based on the emails I've seen on this group) my
exhaust manifold and CAC checked. Can anyone recommend a reputable place for service in the northern L.A., CA. area (around Ventura - Oxnard - Santa Barbara)?? We're also thinking of making a trip to the Eugene, OR area - so perhaps there would be reputable shops up there?

Charlie,

Congratulations and welcome to CC owners. The best advise I can give is to get those manuals out and dig-in for your technical answeres. It may take you a few months to find evething but then you will know where to find the answer. I still go to my manuals after two years. CC does an outstanding job of documenting what does what on your coach and CC Technical Service will do the rest.

Charlie, our Intrigue has two switches like you describe. One is for opening the generator compartment and the other is for getting diagnostic messages from the ABS system. When you activiate the ABS switch it blinks to tell you any diagnostic codes.

I have a 36' 2002 Allure with ISC 350. In response to question 4 below (Temp and low mileage):

I have a Silverleaf which reports the temp from the engine/transmission "network". It varies between 190 and 202 (up / down / up / down cycle) as I drive level or climb hills. My Silverleaf reports 8.1 to 8.2 mpg (which matches my fillups). My dash engine gauge shows 215 degrees or higher -- which I know always reads high. When I use to have a fan controller problem, the engine temp reported by the Silverleaf would be around 180 degrees and the dash gauge would be around 200 or 205, and my mpg would be in the low sevens. I suspect that your cooling fan is running full speed, robbing you of power and mpg. A good test is to take a 8.5 x 11 inch piece of paper, hold it up to the grill on the side of the coach. If it "sticks", your fan is running too fast. If it falls off, then the fan controller may not be the issue.
