Hi: Would like imput on whether an extended warranty is worth the money. I have heard so many horror stories and it seems that with the factory coverage the first year, you are paying for a year that is not used. We just bought a new unit and are wondering what everybody has to say about these extended warranties.

Thanks
Bob

I see it as the same answer as with auto/home/coach insurance. You pay for it in hopes that you don't need it. I weighed the cost of the coverage with different deductibles, features and amounts of coverage.
My experience with my first coach ('98 Intrigue owned for 4 years) was that items claimed were mostly not covered and was expensive. I'm still undecided about coverage for my new coach.

Let me know what you find.

We are using "DFS PLATINUM ADVANTAGE." Everything is included. This is who I talked to -- If you have any questions please email me at MHBYTEL@... or call me TOLL FREE 1-877-642-9835. Mike Czerwien

He was very nice and helpful.

We had a problem in KY and the dealer had to call them before he looked at it. He told them he had no idea what was wrong (it was something with the levelers), but they told him we were covered no matter what it was. He did have to call them back before doing the work. Lucky for us it was any easy (and cheap) adjustment.

Hi Bob,

I did purchase "Extended Service Contracts" for most of my cars and all of my trailers, 5th wheel and the Country Coach we own for a couple of years now. I am glad we did because it has saved us a lot of money over the years.
The key is to find a Company you can rely on and is not to expensive (non of them are cheap) Repairs I had to have done included to name a few; Transmission repairs, Transmission replacements, refrigerator control boards, air condition repairs, starters, generators, water leaks etc. etc. etc..
In some occasions I had the use of alternate transportation and coverage of Hotel expenses. I keep records of all my expenses and I am way ahead of the game and in the case of a Motorhome some of the components are very (and I mean "OUTRAGES") expensive. You have to shop around and have to check with the "Better Business Bureau" Good Luck

Hi Bob

Thanks for your insight.

What company do you use for your extended warranty coverage. Also if you have the contact info handy, please provide that also.

Thanks again. Den

Received a call from National Service Contract Insurance Co. this morning about extended warranty. After getting all the information as to total cost, down payment and no interest installments for up to 15 years I was told that I needed to send in the $500 deposit and then they would send me the policy. I requested that a policy was to be sent first so that I could look over it and decide whether to buy it or not. First I was told that it was not their policy to send out a policy without first receiving the deposit. I was told that they had been in business for many years and that was the way they did it and had many customers. She finally agreed to send the policy--we'll see if that happens. Was a little concerned about sending in $500 and not knowing anything about the company or if there even was the company. My question---if this is legit--has anyone had experience with this company? If this is not legitimate-- let everyone be forwarned. If I'm going to send money to anyone I would like to have a liitle more info.

Egon,

I have not heard of them before. This sounds like the doing of a broker to me but I could be wrong. If they're either so desperate, or so sales-oriented that they ask for a deposit before they send a copy of the policy for review, then I wouldn't want to depend on them for paying anything out, should the need for that ever arise.

I don't see how a policy that covers a motorhome for 15 years can offer much protection. While CC builds some nice coaches, time won't pass without leaving its marks on coach and "house" components.

If you know where the company is located, you can call the local Better Business Bureau (BBB) and check them out. While I, personally, do not think the information the BBB passes out is nearly sufficient to base an opinion on, they may indicate that there have been problems in the past but they won't go into detail. If there is any such indication, don't give this warranty offer any further consideration.

I took an extended warranty plan through the Good Sam Club. It may not be the most extensive coverage and in some states it may not be the least expensive coverage, but the Good Sam Club protects the interests of RV-ers. You may want to compare whatever you get in the mail from the folks who called you against the protection Good Sam offers.

Good luck !

DFS has a very good reputation, I would check prices with them first. I don't think that sounds right. When I got mine, they sent me a ton of info before I made a decision. Plus they answered tons of questions on email confirming items I was unsure of.

All this cheerful talk of step covers has caused me to wonder about cost of an extended warranty. Any advice or warnings? More cheerful stories?

of an extended warranty. Any advice or warnings? More cheerful stories? People who "make out" on an extended warranty (actually not a warranty, but a service contract) are like winners in a casino. Although casino winners, like extended warranty "winners," are in the minority, they make the most noise ... unlike casino and extended warranty "losers" who sit there quietly.

The bottom line is that, if the odds favored "you" ... the consumer, the so-called "extended warranties" wouldn't be sold.
If you decide to buy one, anyway, make sure that you first read the small print ... especially the "exclusions." And, by the way, it'd be great if you had knowledge of things mechanical and electrical before you read it.
Also read the letters columns in RV magazines to read lots of complaints from unhappy "extended warranty" owners. Many of whom regret not reading the small print.

My coach is five years old and I have never had a major repair. When I bought the coach I was offered an extended warranty for $6,000 by Bill Plemmons thank goodness I refused. It would take some really major repairs to cover the cost of the warranty. These are big money makes for retailers.

Thankk you all - I thought it might start up a flame or two. They keep inventing new ways to separate us from our money every day. In Florida and many states there are laws that require credit bureaus to "freeze" your credit info which prevents any new credit applications you don't authorize. You get a password so that it can be opened when you want to.
So now I get e-mails, junk mail and TV adds offering for you to participate in a credit protection service for a monthly fee what is close to free or free for us older consumers.

I don't know how some "entrepeneurs" sleep at night.

There are many Extended Warranty stories. Some I read are very positive while others seem to cause a lot of grief.
We bought our coach in June of 61 and a extended warranty from Good Sam.
In August, just 2 months later, the refrigerator quit. After calling GS, they indicated that the policy covers ONLY REBUILT cooling units (their advertising seems to imply that $3400 something to replace a refrigerator was part of their coverage). Not having much choice I asked where might I obtain one and they provided several sources.

Moving my side-by-side Dometic from the inside of the coach to the outside is not an easy project (as many of you have experienced) but with the help of another we were able to get it outside and 5 days later (after delivery) installed the new REBUILT cooling unit and brought in back inside. The cooling unit was defective!
When I called GS about this, they indicated that was not their problem, that they paid for only $150 labor to replace the unit and it didn't cover labor on defective REBUILT cooling units. I called another source they provide (as the original source didn't have another one in stock) and another new REBUILT was sent out.
This was repeated 1 more time after this (for a total of 3 BAD REBUILT COOLING UNITS).

Enough was enough so we decided to buy a new one. $3400 later and 4 weeks without a refrigerator made our mind up about warranties.
My check from GS was $850 for my $4,000 outlay (I paid $450 labor) at which time the decision was made to "self-insure" in the future.
Needless to say we didn't renew.

When problems arise (they do and they will), we don't have to wait for any decision other than our own which steps to take. There will be no more fine print that excludes this and that and includes only this.
I'm not sure what the coverage would have been on the injector problem I had 1 year later, or the generator problems after that but I wasn't tied to any GS fine print as to what was or was not covered.
Based upon this experience (which does not necessarily represent all warranty companies), you can see what our view is of Extended Warranties.

My experience with extended warranty's is the same as John's - small stuff - no problem but when the big ticket items arrive, they will try any tactic to get out of it.
The most annoying stance is the offer to repair when it seems obvious that a repair will only postpone the problem, not solve it. In my case, I ended up paying half to get the fix done right.

I had a similar experience with GS on my Dometic refer, and on several other repairs. I have foolhartedly stuck with them for 6+ years.
with 20 20 hind sight I would have self insured. I would have spent about the same amount of money, but I would have had a new Dometic or ?? and several other repairs done my way, and a lot less stress fighting over how to repair and how much they would pay.

I have had ACC for several years and it has been a good experience. I have not problem getting rebuilt parts, last year my alternator went out and it was my choice to have mine rebuilt and not wait for a new one. I don't expect to have them pay for a new part that if it were me I would but rebuilt. The ACC link is on the CCI web site and they give you dealer pricing and three years membership in CCI.

Jerry:

What does dealer pricing mean? Obviously the implication is what the dealer pays. But what exactly does it mean given that car dealers use all sorts of similar terms that mean little. Is this some percentage below retail?
