Adjusting Headlights

Yahoo Message Number: 19819
I drove my coach for the first time at night and the low beams are not very good so I replaced them with Silverstar bulbs and now they are brighter but are turned down too much. I found what looks like an adjustment knob that I have to use channel locks to turn but I can't tell if it is doing anything to the beam. There are two knobs that I can see one is close to the high beam and is smaller the larger one is close to the low beam and clicks when you are turning it. What am I doing wrong?

I would be interested too. First of all my covers need to be replaced - they are weathered and hazy. CC tells me to use '87 to '91 Ford Bronco parts because that's what the head lights are. I just returned from driving some very narrow curvy mountain roads at night which really increased my "pucker factor" not being able to see as well as I would like. You mentioned Silverstar bulbs - what's the deal on those and where do you get them? I'm looking for the brightest modifications I can make without blinding oncomers.

Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

The bulbs are made by Sylania and I got them at Auto Zone for $19.each H7 is for the low beam and it made a big difference in the brightness but I need to turn them up more. I parked my Yukon next to the coach at night to get a refrence on how low they were and they point down too much. I will go to a Ford dealer now that I know what they are and ask them how to raise them as I must be doing someting wrong and I will post my results.

I have polished out some very bad headlite lenses on our 98. Used very fine paper 400/600 grit first then used rubbing compound with a high speed buffer and finally fine polishing compound. finish with cleaner polish and wax. You will be amazed at how well you can make them come out. If all else fails you can buy the Asian aftermarket replacements for about 90 bucks apiece.
Good luck

Walt: Yes. That's why I bought it. I had an encounter with a small Orange tree in Yuma the year after I bought the coach. It takes a lot of elbow grease because it is a very fine grit, but it will polish most acrylics.

Walt,

There was a discussion on this board about 18 -24 mo ago about polish made by Novus that was particularly good for the body armor. I've used it with very good results. I don't remember the product specifics and I don't have my coach handy, but a number of folks spoke very highly of it at the time.

I give a two thumbs up on the Silverstar bulbs worth the $40 I spent on them and easy to install. I emailed CC they said my light housing is made by BMW so I will go by the BMW dealership with a photo to figure out how to adjust them. Thanks for all the replies on this issue.

Brian, since you mention it I now remember Novus being recommended for clearing up coach armor. What I don't remember is where I can purchase it. Any ideas?

You should be able to find it at a local motorcycle shop. Many bikers use it to polish helmets and windscreens.

Headlights from CC are considerably less than from Ford dealer based on my experience in Florida.

Well, I installed my new aftermarket headlights and modified the housings with a grinder and dremel like CC had done to the originals. Does anyone know the specs on adjustment? Level surface X # of feet from vertical wall - where they should shine, etc? Or just wing it? Gonna spring for the $40 to add the Sylvania Silver---- whatever as well.

Thanks,

check out these sites for head lights and tail lights, much cheaper than the dealer. If you do not know the brand of car they come from just look at the pictures they provide. carpartsdeal.com

I answered my own question - hope it helps someone else - See below

Accurate headlight adjustmentby Woodson H. On level ground, put your vehicle in front of a wall as close as possible. With tape, put 2 crosses on the wall that correspond with the vertical and horizontal center lines of both headlights. Back up 25 ft., keeping the vehicle centered with your crosses on the wall. Turn on headlights. Low Beams should be hitting the lower right sections of the crosses. High Beams should split the cross hairs. Turn the horizonal and vertical adjusting screws (located at the headlights) to make adjustments.

I was told to look for 1990 Ford Bronco lights for my Allure.
