Compartment Door won't open

Yahoo Message Number: 20016
Hello, I have a 2004 Inspire. I went to open the Propane compartment door, and it would not open. There is no lock, of course, and the handle seems to open as usual, but the door will not come open.
It would seem that at least one of the latches is not being activated by the handle. Fixing or repairing this should be fairly easy, however, in order to do that, I will need to get the door open. Is there any way to do this? Is there anything else which could cause this behavior?

Thanks, John 04 Inspire 51078

John, not sure about the Inspire, but on the Allure the propane compartment does not have a bottom in it, so one might could come in from beneath the compartment and trip the latches to open the door????..

We had a similar problem happen on one of the storage bays on our '05 Allure. The handle would work, but it wasn't activating the pieces of plastic that make the door latch. We were able to open the next door bay and manually poke the white piece of plastic that latches the door. Turns out the piece of plastic has broke. We were able to pick up the latch at a local RV store and replace it.
From what we can tell, the little piece of plastic broke because when this coach was at all the shows, some people don't know to lift the latch first, then pull on the door. They do both at the same time and pull out and upward before the plastic has cleared the latch and ended up cracking it until it fell off.
Good luck with your repair.

Maybe one of your cats is holding the door on the other side and won't let you in!

Just trying to shed a little humor! You should be able to reach from the bottom and see if anything is stuck in the latch, remember the propane compartment is open on the bottom!

open the doors on each side of the one won't open. you

can see the latches from there. if it's stuck you can push them in

John: Just in case you haven't gotten it fixed by now, I had a similar problem, but only after several years of use. The open bottom on the Propane allows road salt and debris to get into the gas strut that hold the door up, and cause it to seize.
I had to reach up under the bottom and remove the bolts holding the strut to the door. Replace the strut and.....good to go.

This may be your problem.

My coach has a floor, at least near the door, and the only access is 4 holes drilled to allow any leak to drain.

Fortunately, in the daylight I was able to see the end of the latch in the crack between this door and the next, and press it with a screwdriver. It had broken off in the door tube, so it bridged the door and the loop on the body, and ignored the activation lever. The other latch was already sheared at the edge of the door, which may have contributed to this one breaking.

If it was the front compartment, where their food and extra toys are, perhaps. :-) But they stay away from the propane compartment.

Everyone tells me that, even CC Technical Service, but mine has a floor under the tank at the filler end (at least part way across; the far end (where the guage is) is open, but not having a problem.

When the doors have stuck on my Inspire (and it happens often), I've opened the door(s) on either side and then leaned with my knee on the edge of the door where it appears to be sticking. The same way you make sure the doors are secure before they are locked. Hope this helps.
