cb antennas

i would like to install a cb radio in my coach. wondering about antenna instalation.

Because the CC body is mostly fiberglass you need one that will operate without the "ground plane" that exists in vehicles made of steel.

I got a marine antenna from Radio Shack - works fine.

Go to www.walcottcb.com and check out the no ground antennas.I just finished installing a 3ft wilson no ground antenna with a side mount above the drivers side window on my 2005 Inspire.I mounted the antenna so that two of the mounting bracket bolts went through the vertical steel frame inside the wall to the rear of the drivers side window.I kept the antenna low enough so it didn't exceed 13 ft 6 in. The coax and mounting bolts come through the wall into the cabinet over the drivers head. From there the coax can be run to wherever you want tne cb mounted.I mounted my cb on the console to the left of the drivers seat.

HAS ANYONE USED A FIRESTIK ANTENNA MODEL # DS14FG? IT'T A NON GROUND PLANE THAT CAN BE MOUNTED ON THE ROOF. IT IS ONLY 14 IN. TALL. I I'M WONDERING ABOUT RECEPTION WITH THAT SHORT OF AN ANTENNA.

We had a fiberglass CB antenna mounted by CCI on the top, front of our 05 Magna. That made the antenna 15 feet high and we broke at least 3 on highway bridges. So we replaced the shaft with a very thin wire type antenna and cut it down to 12 inches. We never hit it now and it seams to work fine. Some people say it will eventually stop working but I'll cross that bridge when we come to it. We also used the same base everytime we replaced the antenna shaft.

They said a Wilson no ground mounted on the side of the coach would work better.I installed the 3 ft model with a spring on the base and kept the overall height a t 13ft 6in.

--The Wilson no ground came with a mirror mount that is designed to clamp to mirror brackets on trucks or you can use one half of the mount and bolt it to the side of an RV.On my 2005 Inspire the drivers side window has a steel framework around it and on the rear of the window the steel frame extends up to the roofline. You can locate this with a magnet.I mounted the bracket so that two of the four mounting bolts went through the steel and the other two went through the fiberglass. The Wilson mount comes with 2inch stainless steel bolts that are too short, you need 3 inch bolts to reach through the wall and end up inside the cabinet to the left of the drivers head. Put the other half of the original mount over the bolts inside the cabinet and install the locking nuts that came with the antenna.I ran the coax into the same cabinet and then down throught the bottom of the cabinet behind the privacy curtain to the radio that I mounted to the left of the driver.

Frank,

I think CB Preparation is standard in Inspire. My Inspire has a CB antenna lead wrapped in top of cable bundle in front of tachometer.
Your coach likely has same provision for CB installation. My coach also has metal sheet in roof for use as ground plane to antennas. A stud detector may be best way to determine location of metal sheet.

Ask CC where antenna end of cable is. Remove top of dash to reveal antenna lead there. At that point you should know enough to decide on self install or paid installation.
CB radio & antenna selection I can't help with; all my CB memories are from 1970s.
