HELP Frozen water pump...need to thaw and KEEP from freezing...in B

Hi there...need some advice...in Bend, OR going to be 0 tonight and is freezing now. Had water pump working fine up until an hour ago..then nothing. Have the "heater" in the bay set to 35 degrees...should we turn it UP to the 40 mark or so? How best to thaw it out now? Need water for the night, etc.

GOt it thawed with a hairdryer, but would like input to keep from freezing again...not enough room in that TEENY place they put the pump to really use a droplight as suggested to me by some...other ideas?

Jan,

We also have a little 12 volt heater in our pump bay, put that in when we ordered the coach. Never used it so don't know how it works. Never wanted to be anywhere where it gets real cold.

When in minus 19 degree weather, I used an electric heating pad (like you would use on your sore shoulder if you had a sore shoulder) and plugged it in to the 20 amp outlet in the outside electric box and then draped the heating pad over the water pump and the short water line that runs from the fresh water tank to the pump. Kept the pump and the fresh water line at about 50+ degrees in the minus 19 degree outside temperature.

Brian, sounds like a good idea, but is it safe to use something like a heating pad in a 'wet bay'? Of course I guess nothing's going to melt for awhile anyway...it DOES sound like something that I could get to work in the tiny space we have...thanks for the idea...Jan

I would use a hair dryer and crack open a valve on the water faucet in the plumbing bay, then the water would flow immediately when the pump thawed out.
I would check the hydro- hot to see if you have green lights on each of the three heating zones. I carry a auto trouble light with the wire frame and shield and if I didn't have the third light I would install a 75 watt bulb and insert it in the plumbing bay not touching any plastic or rubber, if turning up the thermostat didn't work. You might also look for the copper thermal tube on the end of the copper wire in the bay, extending from the bay thermostat and make sure its located as to not being influenced by anything warmer than the ambient temperature of the bay. (like a hot water hose going to one of the heat exchangers in the coach),. I assume you have heat in the coach, the diesel switch is on on the control panel and the little green diesel lite is lit next to the diesel switch, if not look under neath at the hydro hot for any red lites. If you have any, its usually the low voltage lamp and the low voltage reset needs to be activated. You could just have a pump that wanted to take a vacation. There are so many possibilities. Check the connections of the wires to the pump. Copper doesn't like cold, wet, and damp.. TWI 11731

A 40 or 60 watt bulb left on in the compartment will produce a considerable amount of heat and should do the trick to thaw out and keep warm the pump and lines. Don't let it lay against any thing meltable.
