Cummins Valve Cover Bolts broke

I just discovered that four of the five valve cover bolts (down the center of the cover) had broken off. Valve cover was held in place by ONE (center) BOLT. Not much leakage, but a little oil was coming out where the loose (broken) bolts were. Thought I had a hose leak.
Took into Cummins today. They removed the valve cover and spend two or three hours extracting the threaded remains of the bolts from the holes. Very tight access. We removed the access panel on the closet step (Bedroom has slide) to get to the remains of the front two bolts. They did not want to remove the mirror doors, door track, molding and closet carpet to open the rest of the hatch. (They are engine specialist, not RV construction specialists. So they squeezed in over the engine to get to the rear two bolt remains. Used something like a center punch and a small hammer to very slowly unscrew the bolt remains.

Luckly they did not have to drill and extract them out -- have to be very careful of metal in the valve area.

Then they replaced the gasket, valve cover, 5 bolts and steamed cleaned the engine. 5 hours elapsed time including lunch break!

Seems that some Cummings 350 had their valve cover bolts over torqued. Now they have a new (stronger?) bolt. Mine was not the first.

I had the same problem with my 99 magna 350 isc , boy what a mess it made and I had to be towed into cummins as they did not want it to be driven

ISC 350 owners:

Is there a recall on this valve cover hold down bolt problem? Does it apply to engines prior to a certain Group or date of manufacture.
Are there any warning signs that can be detected prior to a failure? James M. Green WB3DJU

--- Three of the valve cover bolts broke on my ISC 350 as well. There is a new bolt with a smaller head that is recommended. The torque is only supposed to be 10 lbs. My Cummins dealer only had two of the bolts and used three of the old ones. Good Luck!!!

Can those of you who have had this problem please advise coach type and serial number. If some of us have units in close sequence we may have the same inferior bolts and not know it. Thanks.

Haven't seen any deterioration on my ISC yet but then we only have 10000 miles recorded.

My 99 magna has 38,000 miles and had the bolt problem with about 25,000 miles, my coach number is 5611; I also had a fuel pump self destruct which I was told was due to a bad batch of new a new design and that they replaced mine with a new redesigned pump
