Trans Temps

With all this talk on Allison high temps, at what point do I start to worry? If approaching "X" temp, I pull off the road and let it idle down to something reasonable? Is Allison in on this issue?

I would guess you don't see temps over 214-216 while cruising or climbing hills. As a matter of fact, if you watch you may see the transmission temps drop while climbing a steep hill as the fan is running at high speed to cool the engine. CC and Allison will tell you that those temps are fine. When you may see the temps get really high is if you sit in traffic or at a stop with the transmission in drive. The temps will climb to the 230's really fast. When stopped for traffic lights, etc, if you shift the transmission to neutral you won't see the temp rise.

PS if you have the Cummins engine you may not see any temp rise at all. Most of the tranny complaints are from the CAT owners.

At the Ft. Meyers rally, I went to an Allison seminar. I thought I remembered something about max transmission temps from the seminar so I pulled my notes. I don't know what the books says, but they told us that if the Silverleaf was showing temps up to 250 it was ok, but 250 in the sump was the max temperature for safety purposes. My notes also said that a transmission overhaul was $6,000-8,000. That's always comforting to know.
