12R tires

Without starting a tire war can someone tell me what brand (and model) of tires you are using as replacement tires on a CC. Size is 22R22.5 LRH. Price paid would also help.

Thanks: Bruce

Bruce,

I replaced my Toyo's with G670 80Rs a couple of weeks ago and have been extremely happy with the tires (1500+ miles). My wife had never commented on the quality of the ride before, it was always good, but within fifty miles she commented that the coach seemed to be quieter and the ride smoother. She was right. I set my pressures at 115 and 110, both higher than some choose to run and the ride is excellent. I am in CA where these tires are in short supply. By the time I supported everything but good roads through the various taxes and fees my bill was almost $3500. All tires were manufactured after the 46th week of 2005.

Michelin makes a 12r xze. tire, Dunlop makes an SP160 in 12R, Les schwab told me in Nov. they had Toyo 12r, Continental makes three or four different 12r, Goodyear makes 9 different 12r's, Toyo makes 2 different 12r's, seems like no problem. Shop around but I would figure between $300 to $400 each.
Some times Les schwab gives us an extra discount during Home Comming, plus there is no sales tax in Oregon.

I second Richard's post regarding the Goodyear G670. I put mine on 2,000 miles ago--what a difference in ride from the Continentals I was running. My out-the-door cost at Les Schwab in Junction City was $2900. Nice thing about the JC Schwab is that they are experts on motor coaches.

Some of the tires that TWI mentioned are not suitable for a motorhome.
Toyo specifically states that there tires are not to be used on any CC motorhome!

The Toyo and CC split must have been bitter.....I am a diehard Bridgestone user....ride great, wear like steel, and have always trouble free.....plus the spped rating is better than most!!!

What size G670 did you have installed? There doesn't seem to be one that is the same diameter as a 12R22.5 The 295/80R22.5 is an inch smaller and the 315/80R22.5 seems to require 9" wheels. My Intrigue only has 8.25" wheels.

I just put Goodrich ST230 & 234 on my Magna, and 3 trips tires run very quiet, compared to Toyo. Tire guy recommended, as they are owned by Michelin, and were $150/tire cheaper. Ran Michelins previously on 01 Magna, and ride seems to be equal.

Bob: I have 275/80R-22.5. Check the Goodyear site for rim sizes (http://www.goodyear.com/rv/products/product_g670.html). You might want to call the JC Les Schwab (541.998.3319) too. I have found them to be very helpful in the past.

Hi Folks,

After reading the link below, I can only conclude that CCI made some bad mistakes causing TOYO to take the only out - stop making RV tires and to prevent, hopefully, no lawsuits like happened to Bridgestone/ Firestone and the Ford Exployer snafu, no use of Toyo tires on RVs.
It's a major loss for TOYO and the RV owners.

So the Toyo's on my 6 year old coach shouldn't be on there? Strange and I thought I was getting great service from my Toyo's! Thanks for setting me straight.

I checked the specs on the Toyo, Goodyear G670 and Michelin tires.
The Goodyear G670 RV tire is 0.7" wider than the Toyo and Michelin.
When I look at the spacing between my dual tires, the space is already less than one inch with the Toyo tires, so switching to the wider G670 is not an option for me. The Michelin 12R22.5 has the EXACT same profile as the Toyo tire -- same diameter, same width, same exact size. I'm not willing to run the risk of reducing the space between the duals, so it looks like Michelin XZE's are in my future.

I just replaced my 6 year old Toyo's after making the trip from Florida to Alaska and back last without any problems. Had a total of 54,000 miles on them and kept them inflated to max pressure.
Replaced them with G670RV Goodyear tires. So far very pleased with the smoother ride over the Toyos.

Bob,

I have also been looking at Michelin tires to replace my aging Toyo's.
Did you choose the XZE instead of another type such as the XZ2 for any particular reason. I read the XZE spec, and it said it was designed for "high scrub" applications. Not sure what that means and RV's may qualify anyway. Just curious, is pricing or availablity a concern? I spoke with a dealer recently, and he was recommending the XZ2 line. I personally want the smoothest ride I can get with adequate safety.

Thanks,
Rob

Hi Rob; Yes, I agree that the XZ2 is another perfect match on the Toyo 12R22.5 specs and is a good choice.

Bob,

On the Toyo website tire inflation table at the following address:

http://www.toyo.com/rv_center/rv_inflation_tables.pdf
Toyo states their 12R22.5 is equivalent to the Michelin 295/80R22.5. I haven't checked the Michelin site. I just thought it was interesting.

As long as you have kept your pressures up and you have inspected your tires thoroughly for cracks, lumps, and tred deformation, I "guess your OK" But I had a friend try to stretch his Michelins 90 days and it cost a rear quarter panel, wiring and a new radiator.etc, etc. . I appreciate the heads up on the goodyears possibly rubbing in the dual position..
