RPI & Coast to Coast

We are considering getting a membership in the RPI and Coast to Coast programs. Any comments, suggestions, pro's and cons would be appreciated.

We have an RPI membership and have used it successfully for years.
The parks we've visited with the membership have been fine. We renew our membership each year.

We have Coast to Coast. If you play the system, i.e. get your reservations far in advance, Use their online availability, and realize you may be considered a 2nd class citizen at some parks, it is O.K. Of course the price you pay verses a full blown commercial park is much less. We full time it and use Coast to Coast, Resorts of Distinction, AOR, Western Horizons, Sunbelt. So we have lots of options if one system will not accept us in a certain. Also most C2C parks are not always conveniently located and you'll have to drive more to get to the attractions.
Our Friends have RPI and have most of the same parks as our C2C...

Although we did utilize our "home" park a lot last summer since the rig we had could run off of 30 amps a lot easier than our CC. Getting a spot that we fit in is not always easy. At one place near Zion Nat. Pk. we could have had a potluck dinner and never leave the coach...just pass the plates through the windows. And that sign on the door that says"...look before you leap" was well advised. The spot was so uneven that we had a 3' drop off from the bottom step. When speaking to the park about their spots the reply was, "You're not here long enough to worry about it, this isn't a long term park." Then 2 weeks ago we tried using one in Idaho. Very simple park, but did have spots long and wide enough for us with 50 amp and local cable. I called them before I made the on line reservations to be sure we'd fit etc. Said I was going to make my on line reservations, but wanted to make sure we'd actually fit. Got the reservations ok, confirmed etc. Got to the park and was told they only took CtoC from May 1st to what ever fall date. We were there the beginning of April on our way to CC for work.
Some people can make it work if they want to go out of their way or have a smaller rig and not as limited as we are with the larger rigs, but we have not had much luck. I commend the folks who can make it work.

I will agree with Ron, BIG RIP OFF. A lot of their parks are off the beaten path and not that good for nice coaches. Even heard of some of the parks selling out and you then have nothing including no money back. Very poor investment.

Are any of these memberships worth the money? I've seen some that seem to think Passport America is OK but then I see others who indicate the same problem you're bringing up here.

I'm the same one who called the membership scam a big rip off in the first place. If one needs further confirmation just google membership resales and see the many, many outfits out there trying to hustle resales and they rarely change hands at more than a fraction of thier original cost if at all. You could always include it in your estate I guess and pass it on ;-)

Some people can do well with the memberships, but we've had trouble except for 2 parks, one near Yellowstone and one near Rapid City. Other than that, they were either too small a spots, always filled up, or only took it on certain days and you can bet we were there on the off days.
Over all IMHO they are all rip offs. If you can get one to work for you, great, but over all you know they aren't going to loose any $.

I think Passport America is different as it is not very expensive. To me sort of like Good Sam club. Yes many are off the beaten path so you have to be sure you can use it. When we got ours we were staying at a PA campground south of Perry for a week. Cut the rate in 1/2 so more than covered the cost of the membership. We will renew based on where we are traveling.

I would agree with you. Passport America (PA) has been very valuable to us - we have been fulltiming for the past three years and it has saved us a great deal of money (our three year nightly campground expense has averaged about $15/night... mostly thanks to Passport America). But, it would depend upon how you travel. True, PA resorts may not be the MOST luxurious place in town. Nor are they necessarily the "most convenient" to the major attraction in a particular area. And, true, they often have restrictions as to the number of days you're allowed to stay or the season the discount is available. But for us, it's been great and we wouldn't consider cancelling our membership. If we have a choice of staying at a PA full hook-up resort for $10-20/night instead of paying anywhere from $20-40 for the same thing, we take the PA resort.
My recommendation: try it for a year. If you don't find it to be useful, don't renew. It is certainly a versatile option (there are LOADS of resorts all across the country) that doesn't cost that much to try.

We do agree at peak season, like in August in Michigan and Minnesota we were not able to use the Passport, I guess all of the locals come out for the fishing.
Yes some of the campgrounds can be on the "interesting" side, but if in the area again, we would go back to if needed to.

I agree, try it for a year, you just never know.
