Water separator question ...

I am going the change the R90P filter on our 2005 Affinity, and I am not sure what is up here.

The plastic bottom section must be a separate piece and is reused I assume. What are the wires for ??? Did I read about a heater unit inside or is this for water level monitoring. There are no plugs for the wiring that I can find, and I cannot find any docs anywhere.

The bottom section must unscrew from the filter body, and you just wind up the wiring harness when unscrewing. Seems kinda hokey to me, I must be missing something.

Have not bought the filter yet so I have nothing to scope out.

Ok ... here I go answering my own question again ...
Using the extensive powers of observation all we Swedes have (like, the sun is out ... it must be daytime), I observed the wire colors going into the harness cover were not the same as the wire colors coming out the other end, so I removed the covering, and there were spade disconnects in there. Takes care of that question. I knew CC was smarter than that.

I will remove the filter tommorrow and see what the story is, I am betting the bottom plastic part comes off and you reuse that.

I know this little dilemmna can't hold a candle to the upcoming jewelery theft debate, but just reporting in.

Mr. Terry, I believe that the filter that you are talking about is the water separator filter. The wires probably go to the "water in fuel" lite that's on the dash.

As far as the clear plastic bottom, yes it can be removed and reused, however, if the "o" rings gets mess up, or you don't get it sealed correctly, then air gets into the fuel line and the motor shuts down. It is clear so you can look thru the plastic and see water in the fuel, and as I remember it has a provision to drain water out the bottom, if needed.

I generally just buy the whole thing for a few, dollars more and replace it as a unit. It isn't worth the problems that it could cause.

For the record, its Mr John and Mrs (Ms) Terry ... she got the boy's spelling.

It says in the book the the system is self priming, our Dutch Star was that way, but there is a priming pump on the secondary filter. I guess I will turn the key on and wait 30 seconds or so like I think I read, and see if it starts.

All my farm equip must be manually primed after changing the fuel filters. It is pretty unclear in the cat manual, says follow chassis mfg directions.

Actually the book says to not prefill the filter, as this allows unfiltered fuel to get to the injector pump. Not sure how much of an issue this really is, and I used to do that also and never had a problme.

It seems like the fuel you put in the canister goes through the filter before going to the injector pump anyway? Mine is the mechanical system as opposed to the newer electronic engines. Whether that makes a difference or not I don't know? Ron

I am not sure what the book says, but I can tell you from experience with twin CATs on my boat that you DO NOT want to let air into the lines. I turned off the fuel and started the engines once - never again!!!You have to bleed each injector.
My CATs had a pump next to each filter. When I have the fuel filter changed on my Cummins they always fill the filter with fresh diesel.
