Using a Lap Top with Dial Up

I know I saw a message from someone who was using a lap top with dial up. How do you do that? I currently have cell phones with AT&T, so I would like to add it to that account.
BTW I asked about the Garmin Nuvi and the response was it is great. I agree.

Hi Everett

I assume you are wanting to use your cell phone to access the internet and not land lines. That can be done, but my experience is it is beyond sloooooooooow.
For the past two years I have used a Verizon cell and their Mobil Office Kit (basically software and a USB cable that connects the phone to the computer. Not all phones support the Mobile Office Kit. Got spoiled with Wi-Fi and cable data service in Fla during winter and my cell contract was up, so I just upgraded to Verizon's VZAccess. I have a separate PCMCIA card that plugs into the computer and is a dedicated cell phone.
I sprung for the Kyocera one even though it costs a lot more than the Verizon model because I think it has better antenna arrangement. Depending on the service area you are in, this arrangement will provide DSL or land line dial up speeds and as far as I know is the latest generation of truely wireless internet access solutions. I have not field tested the card yet, but it works well at my home and there are a number of posts on this board from people who have used the card with success. The March 2006 PC World issue had a great article on the cards which can be found at http://www.pcworld.com/resource/printable/article/0,aid,124165,00.asp
Hope this helps

I use the Verizon cellphone dialup on a Kyocera (ancient!) phone attached to a laptop, but I'm grandfathered in under an old contract where my data minutes count as part of the cellphone allocation...ergo, I can 'surf' (such as it is at 5 kbps!) after 9 'for free.' It works for emergencies and times when we are traveling and need info, etc., but if I were getting something new, I'd go for the dedicated laptop "card" that is now out there...faster than using your cellphone...and you're going to have to buy 'data minutes' anyway.
We're all getting spoiled with wifi in parks now, aren't we!

Well, I don't have many good stories but here is a good wi-fi story.
Buckhorn Lake RV resort in Kerrville, TX has free wi-fi that actually works. No fee, just good customer relations. We recently stayed there for a week and had no difficulties with their wi-fi. No confusing configuration setup and no fees. Just service. They also brought a fuel truck to our site to fill us up at the same price as in town. Free telephone at each site also. BTW, if you love western art and haven't been to the Western Art Museum in Kerrville you have missed the boat. Also, check around to see how to get a tour to the magnificent Brinkman western art collection at the LDB Corp. Hq. I have no words to express the shear awe we felt in seeing this very, very, very large collection of western art originals. WOW!
