Passenger side mirror torn off!

Yahoo Message Number: 23161
Well yesterday while driving in some heavy traffic in Los Angeles we tore off the passenger side mirror. A large truck sitting in a backed up off ramp was sitting rather close to the lane line. He had extended mirror frames that were quite large. I was traveling in the lane next to the back up and the mirrors touched. Me moving at 55 MPH and him sitting still. Our mirror was torn off and dangling by the wiring. Lost the upper mirror and the lower convex mirror stayed but was also dangling. The truck had a cracked mirrir and the blinker dome light was broken.

The next task at hand after exchanging information was to get some sort of nirror working since I was towing a trailer as well. Ended up duct taping the mirror sideways against the windshield glass and around the mirror arm. I angles the small mirror that was still left so I could see the lane next to me. Using the rear camera and the side mirror I was able to see and continue until we can get home and obtain a new mirror assembly and install it. It appears that I can install the new mirror as it seems tobe just bolts and a plug/harness.
Advice on that? Where to get a a new assembly? How easy is it to install?

When we met up with the trucker he said we had torn off his mirror but infact it was nothing compared to ours. He maintains that he was not out of his lane but with both his mirrors extended that far out I do not think it is even possible to stay in his lane. If I had gone outside my lane I would have hit many other tracks that were in that back up as it was the interchange from the north bound 5 to the 101 freeway.

Anyone have a similar experience? Advice on handling this?

thanks!

Kary,

As the truck was at a stop, he would most likely be cleared of liability. Had a "similar" thing happen to us, except we were the "truck". The other driver was driving a 700 BMW and experienced quit a bit of damage and expense. As we were out of our lane, she wanted us to pay for it, but because we were at a stop, the CA court said we were not at fault. The judge said we could have been completely out of our lane and as we were stopped, we would have no liability.

Sorry for your experience, but if it is any consolation; a friend of ours w/ a CC had the same thing happen with a school bus, just recently. If I recall right, he said the mirror wasn't that hard to replace, and that he was surprised how strong the CC was at the mounting point in the fiberglass. No chassis damage, just the mirror.

Like the old Timex commercial.. Takes a licking and keeps ticking.
