Boost/Tie Solenoid Refurbrishment

Hi Folks,

After 6 years the subject solenoid would no longer pass current to the house batteries. After removal from the coach, it was easy to open up by drilling out the 4 rivets at the top. The silver contacts were sulfated but not burnt. Cleaning with 400 grid sandpaper and fine steel wool was performed. After reassembly with 4 small bolts to replace the rivets and coach reinstallation, the house battery bank now charges from the alternator. This solenoid is well built and can be opened for contact maintenance. It is a White-Rogers type 586 (586-105111) and can be purchased from www.evparts.com for $57.23 (586 spno 12v coil). I might be cheaper elsewhere.

Just read your story on the Battery Boost Selonoid. Just wondering, where this selonoid was located on your coach? Maybe I'll get lucky and it will be in the same place on my coach.. Book says somewhere in the inverter bay, but I'm not sure what it looks like. My house batteries are not charging with the alternator. TIA

Great write-up, Fred. A problem I found with mine is that it was not properly oriented when installed at the factory.
As with most DC solenoid contactors, it must be installed with the plunger in a vertical plane and in this case with the terminals facing "UP".
Mine has been trouble-free for several years now since I turned it 90 degrees.

Yes. I had to remove the large steel cover to access it and it was located on the wall to the left of the inverter.
BTW, just changing the orientation of mine solved the problem, no dis-assembly or cleaning was required.
