Fuel Tank Level

I have a 2001 Intrigue. Fuel level has always been off some but seems to be getting worse. Indicates more in tank than actually is. Does anyone know if this can be better calibrated and how?

I have a 2001 also, and the gage has never been accurate.
Specifically, it doesn't move off full until I use a quarter tank of full. I do not know of a way to recalibrate, but my solution is to always use miles driven to determine when to stop--aim for 500, but I never go more than 700.

Hi Bed954,

This issue was covered back over 3 years ago. CCI installed a calibration resistor between the 12vdc and the sensor input at the gauge. I didn't touch it but added a potentiometer(variable resistor) between the sensor and ground. Now for the discipline - before every fillup the position of the indicator needle and the input sensor voltage is recorded and then the gallons required for complete fillup.
This takes at least 10 fillups and a graph is done to see if it is a straight line. Then the resistor is adjusted adding some resistance to lower the reading. This all assumes that the variable resistor sensor in the tank is good and the wire from the tank sensor to the gauge and the gauge and its connections are also good.

In retrospect, would you add resistance to the existing resistence to get the gauge to read lower? At 1/2 tank indicated I can only put in about 30 gallons.

Hi Billy,

Yes, lowering the total resistance to the sensor input on the gauge gives a lower gauge reading. If you have a 110 gal tank, 30 gal should indicate .27 or just above the 1/4 mark. Shorting the sensor input to ground will give an empty indication, disconnecting the sensor input to the gauge gives a full reading. You might try this to see what you get - it will tell you the range of your gauge. Remember the gauge/ sensor combination is a little non-linear, so I adjust the added variable resistor (pot) so the gauge reads 1/2 when there is 55 gals remaining. The variable resistor is connected from the gauge sensor input and to ground so it is in parallel with the tank sensor. I used a 1000 ohm 10 turn pot. Hystersis in the hookup can cause a +/- 10 gal variation. Thus, measurements with the coach level and reading the gauge very accurately is imperative for this exercise.

A new fuel sensor (sender unit) in the fuel tank fixed mine. It's easy to replace, less than an hour doing it yourself.

I had the same problem. All of the dash analog guages were very inaccurate. Turns out that they "daisy-chained" the guages ground.
So they rewired with a dedicated ground and all the guages read much more accurately. But I also lost the fuel guage sender eventually, later on so it was replaced. Now it is fine. no problems and all the guages read much more accurately.

I don't have a clue about all the resistors mentioned before etc... but I know this worked.
