Mud Flap

There was some discussion a while back on the Mud flaps put on a CC. I checked by out and I am removing it as I can see how it would create additional heat. As far as keeping stuff off the two there are mud flaps behind the rear tires. Does anyone disagree, and if you have removed the flap did you get a temp. drop?

I just removed my mud flap prior to the trip I am on. We have been on the road for two months. In northern AZ, Southern CO and presently in Santa Fe NM. So far I have not been impressed. I see no change in engine temp, no change in the amount dirt or crap on the toad and the back of the MH, and no change in fuel consumption. I think I will replace it with one that is shorter for more ground clearance. I saved all the hardware.

That would've been my best guess. I would think that it stops a lot of crap from going behind the coach, and with that big radiator and the sophistication of the diesels I can't believe the flap can create anything that affects the diesel motor. Must look a little naked there too. Hal

Friends being in the Diesel Engine Biz all my other life I removed the mud Flap being retired have lots of time anyho! Thanks to others removing theirs from posts I did the same thing, Diesels need Cool air to operate better, This is why we have Turbos and Charge Air Coolers but in my other life we called them Aftercoolers. Wathchig Pusher motorhomes bounce up and down in some dirt road COE Campgrounds I saw the dust trail and Flaps with metal nameplated get really banged up. Like towing a boat box blade behiend your rig. I saw lots of free air flow issues on Trucks and Fixed Generator installs, Dyno always pointed out weak spots! When a rig is on Dyno there is fixed non flowing air at the rig, Side mounted Radiators simply suck air in not like going down the road. Remember our coachs have large mufflers ahead of the Large Mud Flad trapping and allowing hot muffler air escapeing out each side like a Air Dam. CC Used them for the CC Logo only and kept them stiff showing the logo! Seing this dust blow out on the dirt road and back into the Radiator with heat made me pull off mine. Im not saying we get better milage or run cooler but if our Diesels had to run over 80 percent most of the time heat build up could be seen on the dyno Meters and recorder's! In my other life Dyoning at 100 percent you really learn the more cooler Air to the diesel both in and out of the Engine House the better! We will always have this Issue of Mud Flaps but I for one removed mine and when on bumpy dirt roads like in some campgrounds sure see less dust and also less dirt splash on our toad through rain storms doing 60 mph.
