Exhaust Smoke on ISC on 2000 Intrigue

You bet, same problem on my 2001 Intrique ISC350 since new. About same problems tracing it... NOW we think we have found problem, and on more than one coach!!!! AND it could cause major engine damage. Ours is going in next week for repairs... I have asked Dave Daniel to respond to you as he has same problem on his 2002 and is more familiar with the repair they intend to do next week on both of ours. We also have a friend here with a 2000 with the same problem and maybe the same fix...

Consider removing an unknown (gasoline in fuel tank) - drain the fuel tank and filters and refill with 10 gal, drive it at least 50 miles.

Mack truck here in town checked the Charge Air Cooler, which is the radiator behind the A/C unit behind the grill at the rear-road side. They say that Mack has used these on their trucks for many years but they are fairly new on Cummins engines, and if they are cracked they lose their air charge which results in a superheated engine- a possible cause of lowered power, greater fuel consumption, and black exhaust. It is one of the first things they check with one of these complaints because they can check it with a pressure test fairly cheaply ($38.00 here). They feel comfortable that a replacement of the Charge Air Cooler will solve my exhaust problems and Dave's lack of power and low fuel economy. A replacement is NOT a cheap fix, can run $1,500 to $2,000! A heavy hit if not under warantee. But, if not fixed, the resultant engine temperature could result in a new engine, MUCH MUCH more than the $2,000!
The shop here says that failure on trucks is common and they were surprised no one else had tested for cracks. Like some others, our units have been in more than one Cummins shop, on dymos, and also referred to Cummins factory without the suggestion being made to do this test. We will have to see if the Mack shop is correct.
Both of our coaches go in next week (parts came this week from CC under warantee) so we will see if it does work... We both plan trips in the next couple of weeks & we will evaluate smoke, fuel economy, and power.
Perhaps you can find a truck shop that can test your system to see if it has cracks or leaks.

My '00 Magna with the C10 Cat split the air-to-air cooler on the head. I found a metal shop in Las Cruces NM that welded it without removing it from the coach. Cost $80. CC said they were having trouble with these radiators and have changed suppliers. Sounds like the new supplier is not much better. When I had the valves adjusted on the Cat, they told me the Jake Brake needed adjustment. I think that was the cause of the split a/a. The Jake Brake did not hold as well after they adjusted it. jerry in NM.
