The way I understand the mechanics of freezing the main cause is reduced air flow across the coils. A dirty filter will contribute to freezing or maybe even too many closed vents in the coach. I think low refrigerant can cause freezing also....
So opening the "slats" on the A/C unit should reduce (or thaw) a frozen unit, as should any action that increases the air moving across the coils... i.e. higher fan speed, opening more A/C vents, open the slats. If you get a freeze-up (which can leak water into the coach on thawing), you can also put the unit on fan only to quickly thaw it.
These are my thoughts based on experience and my unprofessional opinion only. I pass this on since I didn't see anyone address that part of your post.
