Highway info please

Yahoo Message Number: 35036
I am in Las Vegas waiting out the wind so I can get to Indio, CA.
Hoping to leave tomorrow morning (Tues.). I would like to take I-15 from Vegas to I-10, then on down, but am concerned about the wind over the Cajon Pass.

An alternative would be to take Hwy. 95 to Blythe, pick up I-10 and on into Indio. I have heard that this route has some rough road spots.

Do any of you have any current experience traveling those routes?

When CalTrans says "No campers or trailers", do they mean big motorhomes?

I would wait till Wednsday. Yes, you are a high profile vehicle and fall under the CalTrans warning.

Hello Glen,

We're currently in Baton Rouge, LA, but live in Yucca Valley, CA. This is the route we always take to and from Las Vegas.
Take I-15 south from Las Vegas. About 30 mile you'll see 2 Casinos across the freeway from each other. Keep going until you see the next set of Casinos in Primm, NV.
Close to the top of the grade, take the exit to Nipton Hwy 164. In about 3 miles or so, take a right to Cima/Kelso. At Cima you'll see the rail tracks on the left so stay to the left and continue to Kelso. Remember these towns are not more that a building or two. The next town you hit is Kelso. An old train station that is now a state park. Then take a left after the train station and cross the tracks to Amboy.
On your way to Amboy you'll go under I-40. Your next turn is to the right to Amboy and you'll be on the old Route 66. The gas station and old motel in Amboy on the right is a good place to stop. They have bath rooms, but not much else as it going through restoration.
Once you leave Amboy you'll cross rail tracks and the take a left to 29 Palms. Take it easy on the curves...some are dangerous. Once in 29 Palms take a left (Adobe Road) to Yucca Valley. You'll go about 2 miles to the main intersection in 29 Palms, at the light take a right on Hwy 62 to Yucca Valley.
Take Hwy 62 down to I-10, it's about 40 miles from 29 Palms. Then take I-10 East to Indio.

Brian,

You need to pay attention to the freeway closures as well due to all of the fires. The 15 and 215 have been closed off and on all day. Call the CHP for highway conditions to make sure. Wednesday might be a better travel day due to less winds and hpefully less fires.

Good Luck,
Kathy

Glen,

We picked up our coach in Colton at Colton Truck today and drove home to Murrieta in the winds. We had driven the car up the 15 to the 10 east to Colton and got pretty nervous seeing all the eighteen wheelers that were overturned on the side of the roads. We took the 215 to the 60 to the 215 south and it was ok except by March air force base. It was pretty windy but the coach did great. I would not have gone on the 15 or the 10 at all. The trucks were having serious problems. I would not want to go through the windmill area on 10 at all!!!
I would wait until Wednesday especially with all the fires. It's not worth the risk.

Good luck and safe traveling,
Kathy
