There is another cause for the controller failure which you have not listed. The other cause is: CC did not program the Fan Control setting on the engine ECM correctly.

I updated this Poll because once published it did not format the way I intended. I created the Poll to determine what percentage of coaches with the hydraulic fan cooling system experience failure. Further within those results I would like to see if there are any trends related to model year, motor or mileage. And if there are any other factors contributing to this issue as John has pointed out.
Therefore if you answer the Poll and have not had a fan controller failure, please check the "No Failure" box only and do not check any addition information boxes. This will allow us to see if the data for failures shows any trends.

CC did not program the controllers. The programming is done by Sauer Danfoss. The specific FDCA part number is tied to a specific set of program parameters.

John, I suspect you are going to get a number of replies like this, but the fan controller is totally independent of the engine ECM and is programed internally by Sauer. It has its own coolant and air temp sensors and is also attached to certain A/C relays. I am no expert, but I know this since I just had to troubleshoot mine and replace a sensor. I am 70k with no controller failure yet.

I stand partially corrected since I see from the useful doc you attached that apparently CC's with C-9's and the ISL 400-03 use an ECM controlled fan. All the others use an externally controlled fan. On those, regardless of who programs it, the wires from the sensors go directly to the fan controller unit. For the survey then, I would think that it should ideally it should distinguish as to whether the failure involved an ECM or externally controlled fan. The variation in high fan speeds among applications in the chart is huge, with many turning at almost twice the speed of some CATs.

CC set the Fan Control setting in the engine ECM to Variable. Unfortunately it should have been set to On/Off dc. The incorrect setting resulted in an intermitant failure of the engine fan to go into the turbo mode when the engine temp reach 205 deg. I know of several individuals whose engine overheated, mine hit 239 deg before I could unplug the controller. Changing the Fan Control setting in the ECM resolved the issue.

Indeed, I read that in trucks that use these engines, the fan is ECM controlled on/off. So is yours now just on/off without variable speeds?

John, I have no idea who programmed the engine ECU so I made no comment on that. My comment related to the Sauer Danfoss fan controller.
On my 2004 Allure the fan controller had a Sauer Danfoss part number which is specific to a set of programming parameters. I have spoken with Sauer Danfoss. I know how they are programmed.

My 06 Allure C9 engine fan controller is controlled by the C9 engine ECM, and the ECM was programmed by CC.
I printed out CC's original C9ECM parameters, obtained Cat's "Programming Cat Electronic Truck Engine" and then altered some of the original settings to improve engine function and performance.
The Cummins ISL 400-3, engine fan controller is also controlled by the engine ECM and was programmed by CC.

Even in the applications you mention there is a Sauer Danfoss FDCA which receives a signal from the ECU. The fan speed is controlled by the FDCA which is programmed by Sauer Danfoss. And, that was the original question.
