Veteran's Medical Benefits Program

It may be of interest to some of you VETS that :
"ALL honorably discharged veterans of military service in the USA are entitled to certain medical benefits, including prescription drugs, at no charge or a nominal one, depending on your financial circumstances."

"Nottingham ( a Veterans Benefits Counselor for the Dept. of Veterans Services at the Yuma office) advised every veteran, regardless of physical condition, to enroll in the VA HealthCare System, even if they don't require medical attention at the time. They will be on record for future problems."

I recently read this in a RV magazine written by Gaylord Maxwell, a columnist ( WW 2 Vet ), who himself, went through the enrolling process and "am now enrolled in the VETERANS MEDICAL-BENEFITS program". " I recently received my first 90-day supply of pills....all at $ 7.00 per prescription".

The process involves:
1.Calling a local Veterans Affairs Office to confirm your eligibility.
2. Requesting the appropriate enrollment form (1 page).
3. Exam / interview at a local VA facility.
4. Or call the VA Health Benefits Service Center ( 877 ) 222 -
VETS (8387).

If you are not covered by a prescription plan or have an expensive one via your existing health plan, you may be interested in this info.

I can FAX copies of his one page article to you, however, the above is enough info. for those interested.
I was unaware of its availability, so thought some of you may also be unaware too, want to check it out, and pass on the news to your veteran friends.

This is a VA program....not the TriCare For Life Program instituted in Oct., 2001 specifically for retired military careerists.

Hope this may be fo help to some......Don

I just learned of this also--(about the vets)....Does the cost for RX vary? Because I have to pay $7.00 per month supply---90 days would be $21.00 for me--BUT still a lot cheaper than the cost I had!!!!! Paul Eno

Paul:

By requesting your Doctor to write your prescription for 90 DAYS = $7.00. BUT, you will be at the mercy of the VAs local or system-wide policy, eg., their policy may limit you to 30, 60, or 90 days.....rarely would they approve beyond 90 days.....this esp depends on type of drug, your health status, lastly, your circumstance. In any case it boils down to their policy. In his article ( current Motorhome Mag) , Maxwell was given 90 day supply of his Rx. EACH Rx will cost you $ 7.00 regardless of the number of days its written for. Also, if you get 3 separate Rxs for 30 days of meds., you will pay $ 7.00 to have EACH one filled at the VA.......even if they are for the same med. Same would be true if you were take the Rxs to ANY pharmacy.
Best that you ask the Health Benefits Counselor to avoid speculation.

Good Luck.....Don

For anyone that doesn't have insurance coverage for Rx meds, I recommend looking into www.halfoffmeds.com. This is an Orlando, FL based business that will get your prescription filled in Canada for shipment directly to your home. Their website lists prices for the meds that can be ordered through their service. My 90 day supply for blood pressure and cholesterol medications was filled promptly and actually cost only slightly more than 50% off the retail price that Walgreens or Walmart would have charged me.
