Electronic Fan Controller RECALL

Yahoo Message Number: 2109
Just spoke with Jorie Leever 800-452-8015 x393 at CC Chassis. He said there is an old recall bulletin WB01-10 on the Eletronic Fan Controller that causes the Desert/Dust Storm. He is faxing me more details, but here are some points he made:

1. Affects many, but not all Intrigues from 11080 - 11360; and Allures from 30452 - 30702. (Manufacture date after 1/2000, and I am speculating thru 6/2001 as my Allure is #30690)
2. Different flow valve was used and the electronic fan controller was not programmed to accommodate the different characteristics of the different valve. CC had assumed that it had the same characteristics.

3. Cold, idle, a/c off = 0 - 500 RPM
4. With wire FRA in passenger side dash wiring compartment removed from relay (simulates 280#), fan should run at 800-1300 with engine at cold idle.

5. Same as 4 above, but cold engine at 2000 PRM, fan should follow with 1800-2300 RPM. Fan speed changes because of the output from the hydraulic pump.

6. Max Fan speed is 2600-3000 RPM. Hard to see because by the time you pull off the freeway, stop and run back and look, the engine temp as reported by Cummins Insite or Silverleaf Engine Monitor has already dropped 10 degrees (even thought the dash guage has not).

7. Default, if any sensor fails or wire short on hot exhaust, is full speed.

8. Pull 6-pin harness on module located at rear lower corner of radiator, and fan will run full speed.

9. Will be receiving and posting Ohm meter readings between A-B, C-D
and E-F of that connector to check sensors.

10. Two pin connector to controller should read 12V. If not, Full speed! Fuse might be blown.

11. Electronic Fan Controller can be easily removed and sent to CC for re-programming or checking to see if in the recall. 3 day turnaround, but coach still runs (with fan at high speed).

12. Baffles are not necessary. Jorie would like you to call him first.

Allure/Intrigue WB 01-10

Posted an 8 page fax from CC as gif images in the "Fan Controller" folder under "Photos" on this forum -- click on the links. Or go to:

for a single web page with the images of the eight fax pages that can be easily printed.

This contains the test procedure and troubleshooting that can be used by those technically inclined.

Thanks for the great post. Last week I had talked to CC and had them fax a copy of the WB to me as well. Was going to scan and put it up oin files area also. Got too busy trying to complete the delivery of the 2000 Allure #30511 at LazyDays over this past weekend, just now reading the recent posts. I did a quick check of the fan on my coach while at LazyDays and everything seems to work fine. I then reviewed all the past maintenance records (great records kept) of the previous owner and discovered that he had a problem and the controller had already been replaced. Hopefully, I will never see a dust storm.

This is a great site in the way everyone shares info and experiences. I also think that the way CC treats its customers as well as second owners is great. Very pleasant people to work with so far.

Hi Herb

Hope this works for you. Unfortunately our 99 Allure was built prior to this fix. Our coach is 30288 and was delivered 8/98. After going through all these same checks with CC and 2 different service centers, we wound up with baffles.

Hi Tom and Joyce,

My 99 Allure was also delivered in 8/98 and is coach #30282, and it did have a modification done to it in 1999 that solved the "desert storm" problem. This was done in accordance with a memo from Doug Rutherford to Dealers and not as a formal Maintenance Bulletin with a number. The text of the memorandum follows:

To: Dealers

From: Doug Rutherford, Chassis Product Support Coordinator

Re: Hydraulic cooling fan, ISC product

If you have a customer complaint of excessive dust generated by the engine cooling fan, the system can be modified to decrease fan speed at low engine rpm without any adverse effect on the cooling system effectiveness.

By removing the fluid orifices from the thermovalveand the fan motor, the fan speed at idle will be dropped from about 1100 rpm to about 300 rpm. The procedure is as follows:

1.) Locate the fan system thermovalve on the top rear corner of the radiator. Disconnect the outlet hose from the inboard brass fitting on the valve. Then remove the brass fitting from the valve. This is an orificed fitting and will not be re-used.

2.) Install a new fitting (CC #15801) into the outlet port where the first brass fitting was removed. Re-connect the outlet hose.

3.) Follow the same outlet hose from the thermovalve down to its connection point on the hydraulic fan motor. Remove the hose from the brass fitting on the fan motor body. Remove the brass fitting from the fan motor and discard the fitting.

4.) Install a new fitting (CC #15801) into the same port that the previous fitting was taken from. Re-connect hose to the new fitting.

5.) Run system and check for leaks.

This procedure should take between fifteen and thirty minutes.
Hydraulic fluid loss during the procedure is minimal.

(end of text)

Once I had this modification performed, I have never had a problem.

Hi Brian,

This is great info. I'm going to bring this to the attention of David King @ CC since he's been the one helping me. If this works, I'll be taking the baffle off. Only 6 screws. I'll keep you posted.

Thanks,
Tom

Be sure to check on this with CC...some time after this fix was issued, CC determined that a hot engine with lower fan speed, at idle speed, with A/C running caused some A/C compressor problems, such as overheat and blown hi pressure hoses as I remember......be aware that defoster also causes A/C compressor to run thus you might have compressor running and not remember it is on....thus I decided not to have the new valves installed......

Others I have talked to claim to have not had any problems....
