20,000 lb single axle weight limit

Yahoo Message Number: 2179
I'm looking for information about the federal highway weight limit of 20,000 lbs per axle? I am trying to find out more about it as the 95 Magna weighs around that. I called Country Coach and the fellow told me that the Magna could weigh in excess of the 20,000 lbs on the rear axle. He said that the law has been on the books for years, but the problem did not come to light, as relating to noncommercial vehicles, until 2001 when some customers called in and said they had been turned back on one of the turnpikes because of exceeding the limit.
That's why the tag axles on the big coaches in recent years.
Those of you that have the single rear axle Allures and Intrigues, to you know how close you are to the 20,000 lb limit? I understand that the Magna weighs more than the Allures and Intrigues. Is that correct?

Have any of you been turned back, stopped or otherwise questioned about the 20,000 lb limit?

The dealer is just blowing it off as an isolated problem, if that.

Thanks,
Bob

The only place I know of that turns you back for being over 20,000 pounds is one of the turnpikes on the east coast. I think it's W.Va but I'm not sure. I understand they weigh everyone before they go on the turnpike. I would be more concerned about the capasity of my rear tires then the axle weight limits. I believe all the RV manufactures uses the same rating rear axles but they all don't use the same rating tires. Then of course we load up the coaches with everything but the kitchen sink, tow the largest thing we can find and then complain we are to heavy. Everyone needs to get a 4 point weigh and adjust accordingly.

Not sure about West Virginia but Ohio was the state doing it on their toll road that runs east-west through northen Ohio. I don't know if that is a current practice or not but it was happening about two years ago.

====================================================================== Hello! Did he have to pay a fine? or was he just told that he was over-weight? I hadn't realized that their were axle limits on private vehicles; an I'm from Ohio. Used to work at one of the service plaza's on the Western end of the Road.
Did the Ohio Troopers hace a portable weigh scale; or was it at a toll plaza?

Dean, How did that compare with your official factory sticker? On my Intrigue there is one by the driver and one in the medicine cabinet. Do not know where CC places them in the Magna range.

I was told it was at the toll plazas. I got the info at the CC prerally in Maine in summer of 2000. They actually said that some were turned back at Ohio line. This is 2nd hand info, I have gone through Ohio with no problem since mine doesn't weigh 20,000 on the rear.

GVW is 31,800 as I recall. specific axles I do not remember but something like 12,000 amd 20,000. Gives me 2500 of additional cargo or tankage to carry if balanced perfectly. Fuel was full, water 1/4.

Bob,

this issue has been discussed several times in the "Diesel-RVs@yahoogroups.com" newsgroup. It's for real ! I remember at least one member wrote he was stopped by Ohio State Troopers some time ago because of his rear axle weight, and another member posted just yesterday (I think) that he tested the collectors by lifting his tag axle before he got to the booth. He was not allowed access to the Ohio Turnpike, turned around, lowered the tag axle again, drove through the toll gates again and was then permitted to continue his trip.

Following my discussion about the Ohio regulations with sales consultant Dave Mills at Buddy Gregg's in Knoxville, and several phone calls to the Ohio Turnpike, we were told about 6, or 7 weeks ago that new instructions would be issued to the toll collectors regarding 3-axle motorhomes and 3-axle buses. However, this does not affect the regs. for
2-axle MHs and buses.

You can still read the messages on this issue in the archives.

Regards,
Jeff

I understand that the axle manufacturer has raised the axle weight limit to 21,000 # and that is on the conservative side. Think about us guys with tandem axles, when we raise our tandem we have about 27,000 #s on this 21,000# axle. We also overload the tires but I have been told at the CCI seminars that this is not a problem. At low speeds the tire can carry much higher weights and the axles can carry a lot more weight then their rating.
