Back up camera failure

We are experiencing problem with our back-up camera. Screen on monitor suddenly goes blank and it is difficult to get the picture back.
Actually the blank screen is not completely dark, looks like lots of vertical gray lines, but absolutely no image.
Usually drive with monitor on so that I can keep an eye on our Toad . First time it happened I thought I had lost the Toad, not good for the blood pressure. LOL

Any ideas would be welcome. Thanks.

Same problem I had with my camera upon arrival at Perry Ga for the Rally this year. Country Coach was going to replace the camera at a cost of $600 as it was still under warrenty, but were unable to right away due to personnel shortage at the rally.

We talked to the local Panasonic rep at the rally who advised us that our symptoms of very dark(almost black) and color reversal , and inability to use as is indicated that the program in the onboard computer was corrupted and needed re-programming. There is a computer mother board inside the camer case. With the assistance of Gary Dwyer I was able to pull out the camera out of the RV thru the access door in the closet, and send it to MITO Corp and it was returned to me a few days later working just like new, and saved either myself or Country Coach $600. If you have questions regarding the camera or the Panasonic equipment on board I suggest you call them at 1 800 433 6486. You will need to get an RVA number before sending to them. Good luck.

Hi David and Karen,

I would suggest you not keep the back up camera on all the time. If video cameras are left on the same image for long periods of time, they will burn that image on the vidicon of the camera and you will then have a permanent image on you screen of the toad. When I travel, I turn the monitor on occasionally to check the toad or when I am passing a vehicle and want to make sure I do not cut them off.
Our Saturn tows effortlessly and I have learned to have confidence that it and the towbar are doing what they are designed to do.

Modern camera monitors, much like modern computer monitors no longer "Burn" images into the screen if left on too long. There is no longer a problem of leaving on too long.

I have an image of my cherokee thats on my monitor when the cherokee isn't there.

I've also had the monitor go out and the cause has been a loose connection at the back (where the camera pigtail and the extension cord mate) and most recently Buddy Gregg said it was a loose connection under the dash. There were no "lines" or color issues, just a clean blank screen.

The new backup cameras do not burn an image when left on, I have logged over 90,000 miles with the camera always on and never had a problem. The camera was left on in my 2001 Magna, 2000 Intrigue and our 96 Safari. We use our present camera for GPS and rear viewing. The image when your towing is changing constantly, I think what you are referring to is an old wise tail.
That only happens with stationary images. The camera CCI uses is a European security camera which made it's way into high end motor homes. It is expensive. Im not sure if they use the same camera in the Alure or the Intrigue but we never had a problem using the camera all the time in our 2000 Intrigue.

David.... On my 98 Intrigue, the B/U monitor was replaced once...total blank. After that I had a flicker while traveling. A CC service person at the factory said "don't run with the monitor on... the car isn't going anywhere..." Nice, huh? I never did solve the flicker.

Hi Dick, The tech guy at CC said it was possibly a bad ground. Ironically the camera has been OK for the past six hundred miles so I haven't been inclined to start any work on solving the problem. Intermittent electrical faults are a real PITA. GG
We will be in Eugene for the rally next week so I intend to ask a lot of questions and see if I can get some guidance as to where I should start looking for a bad ground.
I run with the camera on all the time and wouldn't want it any other way. It is a little extra rear vision which can pick up that solo M/C or small car that otherwise might be out of sight. Some people worry about burnt images on the screen but IMHO that risk is very small.
I notice your comment about the generator shutting down. Mine (power tech 8) did this last week after running almost four hours while we were driving in very hot weather. Started fine a little later in the day but I did need to replenish the coolant in the overflow tank.
